I found myself posting this on another post, so thought I would copy it here.
Anxiety is a Cognitive problem based on fears.
These fears and overthinking cause havoc to the anxious person and their wellbeing. They have beliefs that lead to self-doubt, low self-esteem and self-worth. They are often self-critical and put unnecessary and unrealistic demands on themselves.
Their fear and overthinking being self-critical including the fear of judgement by others, a fear of making mistakes, saying the wrong things, doing the wrong things. All this is based on their beliefs and internal dialogue, the stories they tell themselves in their own head.
Look at the little word that lies within beliefs - yes all the LIEs we tell ourselves within our beLIEfs - We are not good enough, everything I do is wrong, no body loves me, life is tough etc
This Cognitive part or the personal Belief part of Anxiety leads to many Behavioural changes - anything from small issues like blushing, avoiding eye contact and nervous laugher, not answering the phone or answering texts. to much bigger Behavioural issues like avoidance techniques, cancelling appointments, not going to school or work, reluctance to socialise, wanting to stay in their safe place, generally home.
The Physical response or Symptoms to the cognitive and Behavioural issues are what most people call Anxiety - and they can be debilitating and almost crippling - palpitations, racing heart, panting, tightness of the chest, sweats, tears, shivers, washing machine tummy, diarrhea and even panic attacks that hospitalise many as they think they are having a heart attack.
Anxiety and Stress are the main reason for absenteeism in the UK and therefore more should be done for those going through Anxiety.
