Cases of flu are high this winter, so if you’re wondering whether it’s just a cold or you’re floored with flu here’s what to do.

Most symptoms can be safely managed at home. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and use paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease aches and fever. Your pharmacist can advise on cold and flu remedies.

Antibiotics won’t help with colds and flu as they are viruses – time and self-care are best.

To stop the spread:
💉 get your flu vaccination if you are eligible
🧼 wash your hands regularly
😷 cover coughs and sneezes

Battling the flu? 🤧 Here are some top tips from NHS inform to help you feel better and stop the flu from spreading:

TREATING FLU

🔹 Rest and Sleep: Give your body the time it needs to recover.
🔹 Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
🔹 Medication: Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever and ease aches and pains.

The symptoms of flu usually develop 1 to 3 days after becoming infected, and most people will feel better within a week.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD

🔹 Good Hygiene: Wash your hands often with warm water and soap.
🔹 Cover Up: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
🔹 Get Rid: Bin used tissues as soon as possible.
🔹 Stay Home: If you have a high temperature or feel unwell, stay at home to avoid spreading the flu to others.
🔹 Clean Surfaces: regularly disinfect places like your computer keyboard, telephone and door handles.

Remember flu is spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours. Follow our hygiene tips above to prevent the virus from spreading further!

Community Treatment and Care (CTAC) services have been launched in the Borders as part of our Primary Care Improvement Plan.

This new service is designed to provide faster access, reduce pressure on GP practices and make better use of local healthcare resources.

The most noticeable change for patients will be how they book appointments for these services. Patients will be asked to contact our dedicated Telephone Booking Hub or visit a Health Board Reception desk in their local health centre, instead of their GP practice reception, to schedule CTAC appointments when they have been advised by a healthcare professional that they need one.

CTAC services include the following routine treatments delivered by nurses and healthcare assistants, previously known as treatment room services:

• Blood tests
• Removal of sutures or staples after operations or injuries
• Wound care, including leg ulcers and post-surgical wounds
• Ear irrigation
• Injections
• Routine checks such as blood pressure monitoring or blood tests before annual reviews
• Other routine tests or services

Gareth Clinkscale, Director of Urgent Care, Community Services and Mental Health at NHS Borders said: “The introduction of Community Treatment and Care (CTAC) services is a key milestone in our ongoing work to improve access and streamline healthcare here in the Borders. It reflects our commitment to delivering person-centred care, in your local community.”

From October to March we can’t make enough vitamin D from sunlight, so to keep bones and muscles healthy, it’s best to take a daily 10 microgram supplement of vitamin D. You can get vitamin D from most pharmacies and retailers.
