How Trauma Affects the Body
Trauma is not just a memory. The body can hold on to it long after the event has passed.
The brain stays on alert
The survival centres stay active which can lead to anxiety irritability and feeling on edge.
Fight flight or freeze gets stuck
Racing heart numbness tight chest or shutdown. These are survival responses not overreactions.
Stress hormones stay high
When cortisol stays elevated it can impact sleep mood energy and focus.
Tension shows up physically
Jaw clenching headaches back pain and tight shoulders are common.
The gut reacts
Bloating nausea and IBS type symptoms can appear because the gut and brain are closely linked.
Here is the key point
Your body is not misbehaving. It is trying to protect you based on old danger signals.
With the right support the nervous system can learn safety again. Healing is possible.
