They say that there are two things in life that are inevitable, death and taxes. However, as has been proven by large corporations and a smattering of celebrities, taxes can be avoided; death, on the other hand, is a 100% guarantee. Why, then, is it still such a taboo topic?
The best time to have conversations about death and dying is when it’s not imminent. Many people don’t like to think about or plan for their ultimate destination because it’s seen as morbid, scary and, well, just a bit ‘icky’, however if the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that we are all a little bit closer to our mortality than perhaps we thought.
It’s not morbid to talk about death, and the belief that if you somehow start talking about it means it will happen is just not true, if that were the case funeral directors and hospice staff would be dropping every five minutes! It may seem scary, but that’s because of the mystery that surrounds death and dying, most people don’t know what happens when ‘they’ arrive to take Mum’s body or when the curtain closes around Grandpa at the crematorium, a great way to not be scared is to learn about it. What about the ‘ick’ factor? Well again, because there is so much mystery and sanitisation of the dead, people can think it’s all just a bit gross; but in death, just as in life, the human body is pretty amazing.
