Mark is an addiction counsellor with over 12 years experience working within the drug and alcohol field. Mark has worked in drug and acohol services in London and Yorkshire, including working with the Drug Intervention Programme (DIP) team in Ealing, and drug and alcohol services in North Yorkshire. When private counselling is the right next step: if you or a loved one in Leeds are noticing changed behaviour, worsening relationships, or growing anxiety and shame, it may be time to get help. At Start Recovery I look for clear signs—such as missed work, secrecy around substance use, withdrawal from family, sleep or appetite changes, and repeated failed attempts to cut down—and explain how personalised, evidence-based counselling can address each issue. Missed work? We focus on practical coping skills and relapse prevention to restore routine. Secrecy and isolation? Our therapy builds trust and improves communication with family. Mood changes or anxiety? We use tailored approaches to treat co-occurring emotional health concerns. Repeated setbacks? I help clients identify triggers and create realistic, stepwise plans for change. You do not have to wait until things are at crisis point. As an experienced counsellor, I offer compassionate, confidential support rooted in proven methods and local knowledge of Leeds. Ready to talk about what recovery could look like for you? I know how hard the first step can feel. Quitting alcohol is a journey, not a single moment — and there are proven methods that can help you regain control and build a healthier life.

Start with a clear, achievable goal (try 30 alcohol-free days). Notice your triggers and replace drinking with a supportive alternative — a walk, a hobby, or a call to someone who understands. Professional help, therapy, medication when appropriate, and peer support often work best together.

Keep a journal, celebrate milestones, and change your environment: remove alcohol from your home and make new routines that support sobriety. Relapse isn’t failure — it’s information. Every step forward matters.

If you’re in Leeds and thinking about taking that step, you don’t have to do it alone. Read practical, evidence-based strategies and next steps here: https://wix.to/h4ICdGi

I wrote about the real risks of ketamine misuse because clear information can help keep someone safe. Ketamine has legitimate medical uses — but outside clinical care it can cause confusion, hallucinations, loss of coordination, bladder damage, memory problems and even dependence.

If you’re worried about yourself or someone in Leeds, there are practical steps: seek professional advice, avoid unsupervised use, build a support network and focus on overall health. Recovery is a step-by-step process — you don’t have to do it alone.

Feeling overwhelmed by addiction or supporting someone who is? I wrote a practical guide to the recovery resources available across the UK — and specifically how to find services in Leeds.

Start with your GP or local NHS services for assessments, and consider a combination of support: medical detox, outpatient counselling, residential rehab, and peer groups like AA or NA. There are also helplines and online options if you need immediate, confidential advice.

In Leeds, organisations such as the Leeds Drug and Alcohol Service and charities like Forward Leeds offer assessments, counselling and peer support. Recovery looks different for everyone — be patient with the process and ask questions about treatment, costs and aftercare.

If you or someone you love needs support, please reach out — taking one step can make a real difference. Read the full guide for clear next steps and local contacts: https://wix.to/OfoEojt
