A few observations on recent pregnancy and birth in the media...

*They're excellent at using personal tragedy, and parading it in front of the masses with few cherry picked details, always incomplete and often leading you to certain conclusions without presenting the truth

*Nearly always written by people who have no knowledge of birth preparation, physiology of birth while they support only medicalised birth in a hospital

*Scrutinising individual choices while completely omitting serious, ongoing and unacceptable failures of maternity care in the UK ( and elsewhere)

*Ignoring the fact that circumstances are individual and often tragedies occur due to complex reasons while dismissing or portraying mothers to be and parents as reckless, gullible, uninformed or downright delusional

*Focusing on few birth work individuals who do not act with integrity ( yes, they do exist), while ignoring thousands of cases of obstetric violence, coercion and staff practices that traumatise up to a THIRD of all birthing women and parents here in the UK...

And that is just a tip of an iceberg in this mess.
If you're pregnant right now and worried about all this, start with educating yourself. Choose reputable sources and providers that can recommend and signpost trusted experts in pregnancy and birth.

This is not an exhaustive " recipe" and there's much more nuance to this that I can't convey in one post.

And most of all, trust Your instincts, and Your baby as Your body and Your Baby are always on your side.

When people say "you're not ill, you're just pregnant!"👀 and they expect you to keep up with *their* energy levels and their agenda🤯... Of course, you're not ill.

💚Simply because a pregnancy is a physiological process, does not mean you should not honour your needs.

Well, besides, I bet   *they* are not making new body organs, like you, are they?

💚You and your baby are your own, and you deserve to go at your pace.

So if you feel like cosying up- and reaping the benefits of rest, give it a go, as much as you can. Perhaps it might be an opportunity to think about what support you need...

There are many layers to this.

💚Being as you are on your own terms, will be a good prep for motherhood and parenthood later. See how retreating feels and what it brings. Do you have the right support to take time for yourself without justifying? Do you feel worthy of this time simply for you, doing the essential rest? How do you think this can be supported later on in your pregnancy and postpartum either by your family or friends?

💚For now, try to simply be. This is your right. You and your baby need rest to thrive. Oh and do add a warm soup or drink....your body will thank you later 🙏💚💖

Magdalena

When a normal physiological process like birth gets demonised in the media - there are no winners. Not even so called mainstream maternity care.

There is one huge issue I haven't mentioned in the slides...

💚 Birthy friends and everyone -feel free to share.  Can you guess what it is?

When an “official” who has no birth experience, qualifications and has never seen a physiological birth says “normal birth” ideology is dangerous… the audacity is real…

I refer to two issues here-recent headlines by multiple gutter "press" and an article by certain *unt in the times....

Yes, there have been multiple headlines about birth, particularly home birth and physiological birth  that do a great disservice to mothers, parents, babies, doulas. Hell, some of them even throw midwives under the bus. But none of them keep asking who is perpetuating that mess, and who is responsible… Speaking about accountability….

Jeremy *unt, a privileged, white, male, privately educated, never-experienced -racism-or misogyny-or birth-jeremy rings the alarm bells about the dangers… of “normal” birth [in his words], aka physiological birth.

It would be super- laughable if this didn’t affect the real lives of mothers, parents and babies. There is a Latin proverb that goes “cui bono”?  (~in whose interest?)

To whom it is a benefit? Your fear of birth, and those headlines, based on near sero experience  [or truth]…  in whose interest are they? Do you think Daily *ail or Jeremy are suddenly concerned about your reproductive rights?

Ask yourself -whom does this benefit…and start from there. Keep asking until you have the clarity you need...

Always with love,

Magdalena

It is Maria Skłodowska -Curie's birthday today. Maria was a Polish scientist appropriated by the west as 'Marie Curie'.

To this day she remains the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two separate scientific fields (physics and chemistry).

🧐🤔Why am I telling you about her?

Maria's insights have guided not only modern science and medicine (radiology) but also those of us who are inspired by her curiosity and drive.
✨ She 'd achieved so much because ***she was curious and she questioned how things worked***, the same approach that guides us well in life, and also in preparation for birth.

So ask yourself today- do I know what are the basic principles of birth? You don't need to study midwifery to know the absolute basics here.

💚 What do you think? What are the absolute essential elements for respectful, undisturbed, joyful or physiological birth? I am sharing my top one below ✨

Love,

Magdalena
