“Be Like Water”
Compulsion, change, cycles and consistency.
Water. This simple substance is necessary for all life on earth.
Our bodies are about 70% water. Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface.
Water in one of the only substances that exists on earth as a solid, liquid and gas. It is constantly changing state as it goes through the water cycle of evaporation, condensation, precipitation.
Water is driven by compulsion. Rain gathers into streams which flow into rivers, seeking the oceans. In the sea, water absorbs energy from the sun and wind and evaporates again, eventually forming clouds and rain in an endless cycle.
Here’s an amazing thing. Although water constantly changes its physical state, it does not change in its form. Whether it’s a gas, condensed into liquid in clouds, frozen as ice, hail or snow, it’s still water.
The same water you drink today has been drunk for millennia by all sorts of living things. It has been a part of the Mediterranean Sea and the Amazon River. Water gives life to all life.
Water in a stream moves by compulsion under the force of gravity. It must find the ocean, its source. It never takes the logical “shortest” route, but instead finds the most effortless way, flowing with the ups and downs of its environment.
Nothing is an obstacle. No stone in a stream, not even a dam, will stop the flow. Every stone in its path is only an opportunity to find a new solution.
If you’ve ever sat next to a stream, you’ve heard the music of flowing water. Water sings a song of joy as it finds its way home.
Water is a quiet, gentle force. But as it flows, water moves mountains and reduces granite cliffs to dust.
And in the midst of a storm at sea water shows itself to be a mighty tsunami that nothing can withstand.
I want to be more like water. Moving every day, changing state but never changing my true nature. Moving closer to Source by the effortless way. Seeing obstacles as opportunities. Gently changing but powerfully constant. Giving life to life.
