It’s Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and we’re here to remind you that you’re not alone 💜 This week’s theme is Community because we know how important safe and supportive communities are for those recovering, those caring for someone in recovery, and for those to recognise eating disorders signs and support that person towards the help that they need.

Beat will be sharing advice for how to get involved in your community, from how to find your own safe spaces, to how to create one yourself. Get involved with Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2026 today!

🩸 A Quick Reminder About Blood Test Appointments
We know how convenient it is to tick everything off your health to-do list at once, but we want to share a quick update on how our Healthcare Assistant (HCA) appointments work.

To ensure our clinics run safely and on time, our HCAs can only perform blood tests that:

Have been specifically requested by a GP

Are part of your scheduled Annual Review for a long-term condition (such as Diabetes or Hypertension).

🩺 "Can I just add one more test while I'm there?"
We understand it’s tempting to ask for extra markers while the needle is already in, but our team cannot add additional tests during your appointment.

Why?

Clinical Safety: Every blood test needs a formal clinical rationale from a doctor to ensure results are interpreted correctly.

Laboratory Capacity: The lab only processes tests that have been electronically authorized in your records.

Time Management: Adding extra tests takes more time, which can cause delays for other patients waiting to be seen.

If you feel you need additional tests, please book a consultation with a GP first to discuss your symptoms. They will then authorise any further investigations if necessary.

Thank you for helping us keep our clinics running smoothly!

Repeat Prescription Request Process

To help us process your prescriptions safely and efficiently, please read the following information carefully.

⏳ Processing Times
• Please allow 7 days for your prescription to be ready.
This is from the time your request is received by the surgery to when it is ready for collection from your nominated chemist.
• Please do not contact the surgery to chase prescriptions.
Instead, set up the text message service at your pharmacy so they can notify you when your medication is ready.
• Please do not leave yourself with less than one week’s supply of medication before ordering.
• Please allow extra time around bank holidays, as both the surgery and pharmacies are extremely busy.
• Sometimes pharmacies have to order in medication due to manufacturer delays, which may increase waiting times.

Under exceptional circumstances, we will try to help with urgent requests, but it is your responsibility to request your medication in plenty of time.

💊 How Often We Prescribe
• We normally issue 2 months of medication at a time.
• HRT and thyroxine may be issued 3-monthly.
• Controlled drugs can only be prescribed every 28 days.
• You do not need a paper prescription, we can send you a barcode number by text message, which any pharmacy can use to download your prescription securely from the NHS Spine.

📱 Using the NHS App
• Repeat medications will only appear on the NHS App when they are due and orderable.
• If it is too early to order (usually more than about 2 weeks before due), the medication will not appear on the app.
• Some medications will never appear as repeat items and must be ordered monthly (for example short-term or safety-monitored medicines such as prednisolone).

✈️ Going Away
• If you are travelling, you may request medication early; however, NHS prescriptions are usually limited to a maximum of 3 months.
• If you will be away for longer than this, you are expected to make alternative arrangements for your medication while you are away.

🧾 Medication Reviews
• We usually review medication in your birthday month (with some exceptions).
• Reviews do not always need to be done by a GP – another clinician may complete this.
• You will be contacted if an appointment is required.
• If you would like to discuss your medication, you can book an appointment with JG.

🛒 Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicines
Some medications are not routinely prescribed on the NHS, even if you do not pay for prescriptions.
Common examples include (but are not limited to):
• Paracetamol
• Ibuprofen
• Antihistamines
• Dry-eye drops
• Similar pharmacy-available treatments
Requesting these unnecessarily wastes valuable clinical time.

🌸 Contraception Prescriptions
• Contraception can often be prescribed for longer periods than standard repeat medication.
• Many contraceptive medicines are now also available directly from your local pharmacy without needing to see a GP.

🌐 If You Don’t Have Internet Access
• You can hand your request into the surgery or send it by post.
• If this is not possible, please contact the practice to discuss alternative options.

👪 Can Someone Drop My Request Off?
Yes. A friend, relative or career may hand in your repeat prescription request on your behalf.

Thank you for helping us to provide a safe and efficient service to all our patients.

‼️ Staff Update ‼️

We are delighted to introduce our new salaried GP, Dr Emily Williams 🎉. Many of you may already recognise Emily, as she previously worked with us a few years ago during her GP training. We are very pleased to welcome her back to Boston Spa Surgery.

Emily says:

“I am pleased to be back at Boston Spa Surgery after spending a year here as part of my GP training. I also grew up nearby. I enjoy the variety that general practice brings, alongside a second role working one day a week in a Frailty Hub in York. Outside of work, I am currently being kept busy with house renovations 🏠.”

Please join us in giving Dr Williams a warm welcome to the team 👋😊

💉Children under 6 are now being offered the MMRV vaccine instead of MMR as part of the NHS routine childhood vaccination programme.

This replaces the existing MMR vaccine and adds protection against chickenpox, alongside measles, mumps and rubella.

You don’t need to do anything — your GP will contact you when your child is due.

💨 **Chest Infections – What You Need to Know**

Chest infections often follow a cold or flu and can leave you feeling tired, achy and short of breath. Most are mild and improve on their own within 7–10 days, although your cough may last up to 3 weeks.

**You can help yourself by:**
✔ Getting plenty of rest
✔ Drinking lots of fluids
✔ Sleeping with your head raised
✔ Taking paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever and aches
✔ Using hot lemon and honey for a sore throat
🚭 Avoid smoking – it makes symptoms worse

**Your pharmacist can also advise on suitable cough medicines.**

📞 **Contact your GP if you:**

* Feel very unwell or your symptoms are getting worse
* Are coughing up blood
* Have had a cough for more than 3 weeks
* Are pregnant
* Are over 65
* Have a long-term condition (heart, lung, kidney disease) or a weakened immune system

Severe symptoms could indicate pneumonia and need urgent assessment.

Taking simple steps early can help you recover safely and avoid complications.
