The news is in, the delivery team at St James’ welcomed the very first baby of Christmas Day 2025.

Congratulations to all new parents with babies born today and a big thank you to all the maternity teams across Leeds.

The first babies born at the Leeds General Infirmary and at St James’ hospitals were:
Baby Kenzo, born at 12.06am at St James’ to mum Brooke and dad John. Kenzo weighs 6lb 5 oz and was delivered by midwife Ellie and Doctor Bill. The parents said they loved that their baby was born on Christmas Day as it felt so positive and festive.

Baby Declan was born just after midnight at Leeds General Infirmary and is pictured with his mum Courtney. He weighed just over 7lbs and both mum and baby look incredible!

Baby Muhammad Arham was also born super early at 3.32am to Aliya and Hussain, weighing 5lb 3 oz. He was delivered by midwife Amelia and Doctor Amanda and the parents expressed their thanks for all their amazing care.

Baby Margot was born to parents Eloise and Liam at 9:07am at the Leeds General Infirmary today. She weighed 5 lbs 5 oz and is doing very well. Huge congratulations to all.

Sacha is a junior sister and patient flow coordinator on ward J54, an intensive care ward at St James’s University Hospital.

She says: “I have worked most Christmas Days, as to me I’d rather help our patients in need, then I can celebrate with my family on any other day in the holiday week.

“We have had some emotionally hard days in previous years, however we always try to spread some Christmas cheer, sparkle and hope by giving our patients a small gift, usually toiletries, which can be used even for the patients on ventilators.

“Christmas joy is usually high amongst staff, we have yummy breakfasts brought in by each other and add to the Christmas dinner to pile our plates high. We have chocolates for weeks after, we leave the unit rolling away! I always play 'Driving home for Christmas' when I finish- to drive the two hours home to my family. Working to help our patients and support relatives in critical care is a privilege throughout the Christmas weeks.”

We hope you've enjoyed meeting our amazing staff who have been featured in our 12 Faces of Christmas series, and we wish you a peaceful Christmas.

What a fantastic experience for Luke Wilby, a Business Manager in our Haematology team, who performed on stage at this year’s Royal Variety Performance – including singing alongside stars of the stage Michael Ball OBE and Bradley Jaden!

Luke (on the far left of the photo of six singers) was part of the 15-minute finale performance of Les Misérables, playing one of the Inspector Javerts and singing Stars with Michael and Bradley Jaden and three other amateur Javerts. After a couple of other numbers, the show closed with One Day More and Luke was the featured Javert in the segment, singing solo.

The invitation to the evening at Royal Albert Hall was specifically to celebrate amateur theatre and the success of amateur versions of Les Mis. Luke played Inspector Javert in Les Mis at the Grand Theatre & Opera House in Leeds in the summer this year.

Luke is pictured on the left here – a truly special evening!

Volunteers are doing their bit in our hospitals over the Christmas period too - Dan is a Welcome Volunteer for Leeds Hospitals Charity, helping patients and visitors find their way in our hospitals.

He says: “The Christmas period will be a time of joy and sadness for many visiting Leeds Teaching Hospitals. As a Welcome Volunteer I enjoy helping patients and families to their appointments.

"These are often in stressful times, so they are thankful for the support and company. In my role I feel part of the wider hospital family."

Today in our 12 Faces of Christmas series, here's Deborah, Pharmacy Patient Services Manager, who will be working on Christmas Day in the inpatient dispensary at St James’s University Hospital.

A team of pharmacists, technicians, support workers and delivery staff will be supplying medicines for inpatients on the wards, meeting medicine requests from other hospitals and hospices, and preparing discharge prescriptions for patients who are able to go home.

She says: “Sometimes ward teams manage to get a patient home just for Christmas Day, so it’s really nice to know we are helping very ill patients get to spend time with their families.

“It’s usually a busy day for us, but we will listen to Christmas music and bring in treats to help us feel festive. We are proud to support the Trust on this day. That said, we will all be glad when our shift ends so we can go and start our own celebrations with our families. I will definitely be looking forward to that first glass of champagne!”
