We are extremely sad to hear the news about Geoff Burrow. He was a devoted advocate for the MND community and a huge supporter of and great contributor to the building of the new Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease here in Leeds. Our thoughts are with Irene and his daughters and the entire Rhinos community.

It is with deep sadness that the club has learnt of the passing of Geoff Burrow, the father of Rob Burrow. Our deepest condolences go to Geoff's wife Irene and the whole Burrow family at this time. May he rest in peace

Spring is in the air at St James’ Hospital, and the lighter days are the perfect chance to move a little more. 🌼

Even a short walk can make a real difference to your recovery, whether it’s over a few days or a longer period. Getting back on your feet and building gentle movement into your day is a positive step for both body and mind.

We’ve put together a set of simple and safe walking routes around the hospital. They’re easy to follow, with clear wayfinding and quiet spots to pause whenever you need to. The routes are designed to help you go at your own pace and enjoy the fresh spring light.

Patients like Mickey have told us how much these walks lift their mood and help them feel more confident during recovery. It’s often the small steps that matter most.

You can explore all the routes on our website - link in comments.

We've signed up to the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Strategy, which wants to get rid of all road deaths and serious injuries across West Yorkshire by 2040, while promoting safe, healthy, and mobility for all.

Chief Executive Brendan Brown signed the pledge, he said: "My Vision Zero pledge is to make sure we support this campaign, as it saves lives for both drivers and pedestrians in the communities we serve, and in which we all live.

"On a personal level my pledge to help make our roads safer is by always making sure I drive at appropriate speeds for the road and weather conditions I’m driving in."

We're celebrating the 150th robotic surgery for endometriosis in our hospitals since the robotic programme launched two years ago, a landmark number during Endometriosis Awareness Month.

Congratulations to the whole team involved in this process, from those who book our patients in, to those involved in setting up the surgical space and the delivery of care post operation. Mr James Tibbott, Clinical Lead for Gynaecology said that with quicker operations and faster recovery, he hoped his team would continue to pave the way for better healthcare for women with endometriosis, and for women in general.

We also shared recently that the endometriosis team at Leeds was recently fully accredited as a British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) Endometriosis Centre.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone from the Leeds Age Friendly Steering Group who gave up their time to visit St James's Hospital recently.

The group split up into pairs to locate different departments around the hospital whilst assessing accessibility, wayfinding and signage on site.

Their feedback will help make our hospitals not just age and dementia friendly – but better for everyone!

Congratulations to Dr Susan Picton at Leeds Children's Hospital who has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from CCLG: The Children & Young People’s Cancer Association.

Thank you Susan, for your incredible contribution to children and young people's cancer services at Leeds and further afield.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr Susan Picton!

Dr Susan Picton was recently presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by the Children and Young People’s Cancer and Leukaemia Association (CCLG) at their Member Awards hosted in Manchester.

Susan is a Consultant Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist here at Leeds Children’s Hospital where she recently took on the additional role of Interim Clinical Director.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Susan’s 40 year contribution to children’s cancer, including 30 years here at Leeds. The award nomination referenced Susan’s contribution to continuous improvement in patient care, clinical research, development of national guidelines as well as various regional and national leadership roles.

The award also recognised Susan’s considerable contribution to children’s cancer services in developing countries. Susan founded and continues to advise a chemotherapy service for Ugandan children with retinoblastoma. She is also Lead Doctor for a twinning children’s cancer programme between Cameroon and Leeds as part of the World Child Cancer initiative.

Susan was presented with her award by Dr Sarah Stoneham (Chair of CCLG)

Susan said:

'I have enjoyed all of my career but particularly my time here in Leeds. I have seen the chances of survival improve hugely in almost all childhood cancers during this time. I have been fortunate to be able to work with colleagues from around the world in clinical trials and I have loved working in Africa developing affordable treatments for children in Cameroon and Uganda'

We are extremely proud of Susan’s achievements and we’re delighted that she has been recognised with such a fantastic award!
