A cold is a milder illness than the flu. While cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days, flu symptoms can make you feel quite poorly for a few days to weeks. You can usually treat a cold without seeing a healthcare professional, but if you wish to, seek advice contact your local community pharmacist.

Colds & flu.

Colds and flu are common illnesses caused by viruses. They mostly affect the nose, throat, and lungs. Colds and flu have similar symptoms, like a runny nose, cough, and feeling tired, but flu makes people feel much worse and can lead to more serious problems.

To help you get better more quickly:
*rest and sleep
*drink plenty of water (fruit juice or squash mixed with water is OK) to avoid dehydration
*keep warm
*gargle salt water to soothe a sore throat (not suitable for children)
*take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains
*relieve a blocked nose with decongestant sprays or tablets

You can buy cough and cold medicines from community pharmacies or supermarkets. A community pharmacist can advise you on the best medicine to use.

Antimicrobial Resistance is one of the most urgent global threats to the public’s health. Antibiotics can cause side-effects, including nausea and diarrhoea and contribute to the development of Antibiotic Resistance

Most common infections like coughs, colds, sore throats and flu get better on their own without antibiotics.

In many cases, our immune system will do a better job of clearing the infection without the need for extra treatment. There are a few things we can do at home to help manage some symptoms:

* Simple paracetamol-based products are a great way to lower temperatures, reduce headaches and also help with general aches and pains.

*For nasal congestion it may be appropriate to use an oral decongestant tablet or a product such as drops or sprays that goes directly up the nose.

*For babies and young children it may be best to use simple saline nasal drops which can help relieve all that congestion and snot. It’s a gentle way to loosen things up and makes it a little bit easier for them to breathe and feed.
