Off to Edinburgh this weekend to work with the fantastic students from the soaring organisation of Physis!

One of the meanings of Physis is the concept of being in constant flux! The very nature of our being and our universe is that it is constantly changing even at the micro atomic level. A huge existential idea! I’m just thinking about what changes happen in the world when I simply open a text.

A tiny heartbeat in the Chyulu Hills just changed everything.

Rangers in Kenya have confirmed the birth of a critically endangered eastern black rhino calf. It is the second calf in two years for this small wild group.

The little one is estimated to be about six months old. Rangers first noticed tiny tracks in the dust, following close behind a mother.

Camera traps later caught the pair moving through the thick bush. The mom is a first-time mother named Namunyak, which means blessed.

With this birth, the local population rises to nine. For a subspecies that nearly vanished here, that number feels huge.

The calf’s s*x isn’t known yet. That is normal. Babies keep close to mom and stay hidden for safety.

Each day the calf survives, its odds get better. Rangers are watching, quietly, to give it the best chance.

This is what protection looks like. Long patrols. Community support. Patience. And then, one day, a miracle appears on a trail.

Some say the father may be a male called Chester. What’s certain is that many hands helped this life arrive and be seen.

Today, hope is a small rhino trotting after its mother. And hope is enough to keep going.
