Patient Centred Outcomes Research- PCOR

Patient Centred Outcomes Research- PCOR Based at St James’s Institute of Oncology, we research how patient reported outcomes (PROs) can be used to improve cancer care and quality of life.

The Patient Centred Outcomes Research Group is part of the University of Leeds and based at St James’s Institute of Oncology, Leeds, UK. Many of our current studies involve developing and evaluating web based systems for cancer patients to report information about their health and wellbeing. We work closely with clinical and
academic colleagues locally, nationally and internationally to ensure the work we do has high potential for clinical translation and impact.

🌟 578 patients recruited to the CANVAS study - CANcer SurVeillance And Support after treatment funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research🌟
After recruiting our first patient to CANVAS in June 2021 we have finally completed our recruitment and our last patient has completed the study! We recruited 578 patients in total and are so happy with the level of interest and participation.
The overall objective was to support people with a Breast or Colorectal cancer diagnosis in the follow-up phase of their care (post-treatment). We developed a tailored online self-reporting symptom/side effect questionnaire linked with self-management advice, depending on the level of severity of symptoms reported by the patient. For certain severe symptoms considered clinically significant, notifications were triggered, and clinicians were emailed details of the patient’s symptom reported. Patients were then contacted and/or seen in clinic.
The aim of the study was to see if this mode of online remote surveillance was a feasible and beneficial follow-up mode for these two patient groups, from a patient and clinician perspective.
Now that all participating patients have completed their time on study we will start our data analysis! Watch this space or keep an eye on our website https://pcor.org.uk/ for study findings in the near future.

First publication from the Social Integration After a Cancer Diagnosis in Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) project can now be viewed here: https://mdpi.com/2072-6694/16/7/1332… The results of this interview study provide rich and important insight on how mental health is affected by a diagnosis of cancer in young people and the barriers to accessing care (including avoidance of support).

The biographical disruption that occurs in adolescents and young adults following a cancer diagnosis can affect various important psychosocial domains including relationships with family and friends, sexual development, vocational and educational trajectories, and physical and emotional wellbeing. Proud that our Patient Centred Outcomes Research contributed over 500 participants to the total recruitment figures in Leeds in 2017-2018 helping to put us in the top ten trusts with the largest volume of research studies Thank you to all the patients and staff for the continued involvement

We are pleased to announce that Leeds Teaching Hospitals has placed top nationally for increase in recruitment in all research studies, with 19,179 in 2017/18 compared to 12,431 in 2016/17.

We are also in the top 10 nationally for the number of research studies we have supported during the year, coming fourth in the country.

Dr Jacqueline Andrews, Director for Research and Innovation at LTHT, said: "We are delighted that Leeds Teaching Hospitals has been able to contribute so significantly to NIHR recruitment to studies this year.

“We are looking forward to even closer partnership working with NIHR in 18/19 when our new £4million 18-bed Clinical Research Facility (CRF) opens in spring 2019.

“We thank all our research-active staff who have embraced new ways of working, to deliver a greater volume of research to ensure our patients have access to the very latest developments in research and innovation."

One participant in research was Leeds man Paul Driver, who is currently taking part in the NIHR and Cancer Research UK-funded FOCUS4 trial into advanced bowel cancer.

He said: “It’s the data itself which is important and all the results are important. I know I can’t talk about curing my cancer but I can help other people.”
