LUU Wilderness Medicine

LUU Wilderness Medicine LUU Wilderness Medicine is a fun and friendly society. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?!

Whether you are thinking about a career in wilderness medicine or just love roaming the great outdoors and want to learn some new skills along the way, we hope you will come and join us! You’re hours away from hospital in unforgiving conditions on a misty mountain top, and a medical disaster strikes... What are you going to do?! Whether it’s a career in wilderness/expedition medicine you’re interested in, or you just enjoy roaming the great outdoors with a fab bunch of people, we’re the society for you. We run scenario weekend trips to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland and many more, as well as lovely GIAG and day trips to local spots like Ilkley Moor or Settle. We are also very excited to work with the Holme Valley and Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Teams, who run great events with us. A friendly bunch, we love a nice scenic walk, a bit of excitement and of course, a good wilderness medicine scenario. As a society, we are super excited to be hosting Northern Wild Trials 2026 on 20nd - 22th February in Hebden Bridge! This is competition between other wilderness medicine societies and involves a circuit of high-fidelity pre-hospital sims. It’s always a super fun weekend and a great opportunity to practice your wilderness A-E and team working skills (swipe to see some photos from last year!)

As a university we will be taking two teams of four, each consisting of two clinical (Year 3 and above Medicine, Year 2 and above Paramedics) and two pre-clinical (non-medics and Year 1 and Year 2 Medicine).

Because there are so many keen members this year, we have decided that the fairest way to select teams is to run a sims evening for anyone interested in getting involved. This will be an opportunity for you to show off your A-E skills that you’ve learnt this term and hopefully bag a spot on a team! This sim evening will be run before the Christmas break.

Please note that being part of a Wild Trials team requires you to be available on 20-22 February 2026 as well as being willing to commit to at least once weekly training evenings in the weeks leading up to Wild Trials. More details and specifics to follow once teams are confirmed.

To register your interest please fill out the ‘Expression of Interest’ form linked in our bio and being circulated in the WhatsApp community. Please feel free to DM us or respond to the question section of the form if there’s anything you would like to ask us about Wild Trials 2026!

Please complete this form by midday on Wednesday 3rd December.

As promised, the photos keep on coming! These pics are from our tropical illnesses and bandaging sessions. Dr Cam Mullin delivered a fascinating talk on all things tropical and infectious diseases, with a healthy dose of snake content 🐍! Sadly Dr Izzy Morgan was unable to attend on this occasion (she’ll be back… watch this space!)
We finished the evening off with lots of bandaging practice, even incorporating some splints and slings!

Some photos from the fab teaching session run by Ruby and Trinity on A-Es. We then split up and ran through some scenarios and how to move, package and transport someone! We’ll be uploading pictures from the other sessions over the next few days and tickets for our last teaching session this term will go out next Monday!

🌟MEET THE COMMITTEE!!🌟 - PART 3

Last, but by no means least, it's time to bring out the big guns and introduce you to our President, Vice President and Treasurer!

Captaining the Wilderness expedition this year is our wonderful President Ruby (4th Year Medicine)! Fresh off back-to-back Northern & Wild Trials wins, she's ready to take charge and make Wilderness the best it can be!

Teaming up with Ruby as her fantastic Vice President is Trinity (3rd Year Medicine) who will be helping organise all our exciting events for this year (and also provided us with some lovely committee shirts so you know who we all are)!

Our lovely Treasurer Benji (2nd Year Geophysics PhD) is in charge of applying for grants, approving expenses, and just generally making sure we don't spend all our money on spinal boards and laminators!

Keep an eye out for a Save the Date post and information regarding all our upcoming events this Fresher's week!!
