Health protection training
LCC's Public Health team are passionate about preventing illness, protecting health, promoting wellbeing and reducing health inequalities for the people of Leeds. One of the ways in which we are doing this is by raising awareness of our key health protection priority issues with our colleagues that interact and work closely with those most at risk from health inequalities.

We've delivered our health protection training to home care providers and are now looking to deliver this training to other services and organizations who would benefit from learning about how to protect people's health in Leeds.

Sessions are approximately 2 hours, including breaks and cover bitesize information and interactive activities on a range of health protection topics which could include:

adverse weather and the home environment
air quality
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
infectious diseases such as tuberculosis
infection prevention measures
life course vaccinations
parasites
sepsis

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.

The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) which runs from 18 to 24 November is a global campaign to raise awareness and increase understanding of AMR and to promote global action to tackle the emergence and spread of drug-resistant pathogens.

The theme for WAAW 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.”

This postcard,-sized leaflet, which is available to order from ourselves as part of your PHRC membership - When you have a cold or flu, antibiotics are not for you! (L133) - aims to advise people that they don't need antibiotics to get rid of coughs, cold and flu.

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week takes place from 18 to 24 November each year and is led globally by the World Health Organization (WHO). It aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practices among the public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. Raising awareness of AMR is important to encourage collective action to help us reduce the risks of this crisis.

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) research tells us that there is a high level of public awareness about the risks of AMR to the nation’s health, yet most people do not know what they can personally do to combat it. Misconceptions about antibiotics and incorrect behaviours remain prevalent among the groups that use antibiotics the most – younger people. The key messages below aim to increase public awareness and understanding of the correct and incorrect antibiotic behaviours:
1. Don’t take antibiotics for colds and flu
2. Don’t save antibiotics for later - return unused antibiotics to your local pharmacy.
3. Take antibiotics as directed by your healthcare professional.
