Sarcopaenia - sounds terminal doesn't it? In fact, it's actually age-related loss of muscle mass & strength.
"That doesn't affect me!" you may hear younger people say, but at what age does it start? 60? 70?
In fact, it starts after age 35! There's a 1-2% further loss of muscle mass each year thereafter and up to 3% after age 60 with fat gain, leading to difficulties with day-to-day tasks, loss of strength and balance, leading to shortened lifespan.
That's the bad news, fortunately there's some good news!
Good diet & regular exercise help, but recent research shows that the combination of aerobic exercise with resistance or weight training can reduce this affect by up to 47%! Hurrah!
But,
Am I too old to start?
What sort of exercises are best?
Check out our next post when we will reveal all!
