Can you help our Green Room Gardeners?

Green Room Gardeners is BSA's very special gardening and eco-arts based project. Sessions support and include those with lived experience of mental health challenges, alongside young homeless people, and a broader community of people interested in exploring gardening and the arts as a way to support mental health, wellbeing and the environment.

On December Monday 23rd we will be joining forces with Santa, plus Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and Leicester City Council Homelessness Services - to get much needed presents to approximately 80 homeless children currently living with their families in temporary crisis accommodation over Christmas. Can you help us? Please see our short film here and information below.

Can you help by donating (small) soft toy items in good or new condition? Items can be dropped to the desk at Leicester Central Library for us to collect - until midday on Monday 22nd December. We’d love to add one small toy to each child’s Green Room Gardeners gift bag. It would make such a difference if you might be in a position to get involved.

BrightSparks Arts is looking for a web designer

BrightSparks Arts is a Leicester based charity that supports people with severe and enduring mental illnesses through creative workshops, projects, events, exhibitions and publications. We have a strong presence in the local mental health community, and we are loved by our participants and respected by our partners and peers. BrightSparks Arts is proud of its grass roots authenticity and we are trusted to deliver high quality and meaningful provision to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities while retaining our inclusive and empowering approach.

Established 25 years ago, we have recently been undergoing a process of development, which has involved us growing our board of trustees, developing our income streams, and seeking new relationships with community, cultural and corporate partners in the local area and further afield. As part of this process, we have developed a new brand, which was driven by our participants, in line with everything we do.

We are now looking for a web designer to create a website that will serve our developing organisation’s needs as we continue to grow our reach and reputation. The website must appeal to both our participants and their families/friends and carers, and to our partners and potential corporate and individual supporters. As such, it’s important to us to retain and demonstrate our approachable and grass roots ethos, while communicating our very important role in supporting vulnerable people through creativity and the impact that has on participants and the local community more widely.

We would like to see a website that is clear and user friendly, that includes the following elements:

Information about the organisation - Board of Trustees, Participant Committee, Team, participants/case studies, our mission and values

Referrals process - information for mental health professionals and individuals/families – to include a referral form to complete online

Current programme – details of what we’re doing

Latest News - Headlines and sign up for our newsletter

Support Us – Sponsorship/corporate support info in a pdf we have development

Contact Us page

The website would need regular updates on the news, training and current programme pages. We would prefer a package to include training our Communications Manager to make these updates but would also consider an ongoing update arrangement with the designer.

The total fee available is £5000

The project would need to be completed between February and June 2026

If you are interested in applying please send your proposal, either in a document format of no more than 4 pages or a video of no more than 5 minutes, outlining your proposed approach, alongside your/your company’s portfolio and outline of experience with examples of your work to office@brightsparksart.uk
Proposals to be received by 5pm on Friday 16th January.

And this amazing 'Man of Fire' piece created by Jessica Annie Parkes at our 'Fire' inspired Smoothie session last week.

Man of Fire.

Man eating fire like a
hot coal trap working
the flame like a hazard
alarm arsonist burns to
the blaze embers of
smoking and eating coal
like a hot fire trap.
Man who eats a hot coal
fire what is this
hazard fire trap are
you simply an ember
or smoking the fire
like a hazard blaze
that burns.

I'm not sure who created this wonderful leave at our recent Autumn inspired ArtsCafe session led by Sue Jordan at The Bradgate Mental Health Unit.

This piece was created by AAndy Richardsonat a recent Wednesday Words online session. It is inspired by an article about three young Ukranian women training to be drone operators.

A cave near the front line.

Wave after wave of Russian drones,
Murdering civilians, destroying homes.
They huddled in their cave on a stormy night,
a crackling fire was burning bright.
They were anxious about what the next day would bring
but their fighting spirit was still undimmed.

And another 'Fire' inspired poem from Mondays Smoothie session. This time created by Netty Jonas.

Fire.
The embers were still,
the fire was still burning,
blazing on high.
Smoking flames of coal
unwatch a hazard,
it was hot,
it was a trap.
The alarm sounded,
until the fire brigade turned,
the addition of water created a wall of steam.
The fireman went to work,
what will we do without them,
I guess we'd have to let the fire burn.
