Sign & Rhyme

Sign & Rhyme Fun and playful baby and toddler signing and singing groups with songs, musical instruments and stories to develop early interactive skills Hello – I’m Marie.

My experience as a speech and language therapy assistant, coupled with my signing skills (British Sign Language Stage 2), sparked my enthusiasm for baby signing. I’ve been teaching baby signing for some time now, and I can appreciate the benefits for both you and your child: it’s a fun and rewarding way to make the most of your baby’s natural ability to communicate; it encourages and supports their language development - you will always use signs together with the spoken word - giving them a head start when they begin to use their vocabulary, spelling and reading skills; and it strengthens the bond between you and your child.

🥰 Babies can understand so much before they actually talk, and baby signing enables them to communicate their emotions and needs effectively. Your ability to understand these needs through simple signs gives you the confidence to respond appropriately and helps to reduce frustration for you and your baby. The learning process is great fun, too and the classes are relaxed and friendly. Please call 07710 217466 message me via Facebook or email marie@signandrhyme.co.uk if there’s any further information that you want to discuss, or for details of future course dates. My classes run at Bagworth Community Centre, Station Road, Bagworth LE67 1BH.

🥰 Weekly ‘Song in a Bag’ sessions. Age range birth to five years - £5 per session or £22.00 for five weeks (please note there are no refunds given for missed sessions if you pay in five week blocks.) Lots of fun for you and your little ones. Interactive session of signing and singing, musical instruments and so much more for you all to enjoy.

🥰 Five-week baby signing course to include handouts, £40, payable in advance. Age range 6months to twelve months. Learn specific signs to use with your baby in their daily routine. Lots of fun for you and your baby, a very interactive session for you all to enjoy.

Hi everyone ☺️, thank you for coming along to Sign & Rhyme today at Bagworth Community Centre 😃.

Welcome to our new family who came along today 😊, we hope you enjoyed yourselves 😊.

We always have lots of smiles from our families at our sessions and it is great to see the children engaging with the activites and with each other 😀.

Our signs for his week were 'SAME' and 'DIFFERENT'. These signs can be used within their play to help them understand the words.
Ideas for games
Memory cards - use about four matching cards. When they have two cards that are the same, say and sign 'SAME'. If they choose two that are different, say and sign 'DIFFERENT'

Children love posting things so you can also post the matching cards
Matching socks - find matching socks for teddy to wear🧸.

By using these words/signs 'SAME & DIFFERENT' prepares children for Literacy for when they go to school.
Listening for the same sounds for rhyming.
Listening for same sounds at the beginning, middle and end of words. 😊

I hope you all have a lovely week, and I will look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday 😀.

Happy signing 😃.

Friday fun at Incy Wincy’s Preschool - Bagworth this morning🥰. Lots of smiles, and a few new faces too☺️.

We had great singing from the children, especially with BAA BAA 🐑, and great actions for our JIG-A-JOG song🐎.

The little bird 🐦‍⬛was back for music time, and the children did exceptionally well keeping their instruments quiet until the bird🐦‍⬛ pecked its way down to the bottom of the pole🐦‍⬛, you could hear a pin drop the children were that quiet🤫. Well done all of you🥳.

I hope you all have a great week, and I shall look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday🤩.

Have fun

What a beautiful day we had for our Sign & Rhyme session, and as ever we had lots of smiles too 🥰.

Lovely to see two of our girls making friends with the very young girls, lovely eye contact exchanged by them all🥰.

We had some great guesses as to what might be in our 'Sparkly Box' and quite a few of you got it right🥳, it was a... BUS🚌. Well done 🥳.

Our signs for this week are 'TIRED' and 'BED'. Young children may not know/understand yet that they are tired, they may know something isn't quite right, so they do what they know best, and they cry. Sometimes this crying goes on until they are exhausted and then they fall asleep. By introducing these signs, through pretend play this may help them understand when they are tired and need rest❤️.

Ideas for using these signs at home
TIRED/ BED - Pretend play, when playing dolls/ teddies or Paw Patrol with your little one, do a little jumping with them and their doll (teddies or Paw Patrol). After a while, pause and say 'I think dolly is TIRED, shall we put her to bed?' By doing this play with your little one it helps them to understand TIRED and BED. Always say and sign the key words at the same time.
TIRED/BED - There are lots of books about bedtime, especially animals which children love, so this is another way to use these signs by talking about the sleepy animals etc😍.

It's lovely to hear some of the words/sentences your children are saying during our session - as we were nearly finishing our music activity today one of our girls said 'That's enough now'🤣BRILLIANT. Syllable clapping, one of our boys was insistent that he wanted us to clap out 'HORSEY' rather than 'HORSE', which was great, as he did the correct number of claps, and it was lovely to hear him say HORSEY very clearly too 🥳.
Even though we have very young babies/children they are still communicating very well with kicking their legs, smiling or reaching for objects to let us know they are excited and enjoying themselves❤️. Well done everyone.

I hope you all enjoy the sunshine and I shall look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday 🤩.

Happy signing
Marie🤩

Our Sign & Rhyme session at Bagworth Community Centre this morning had that lovely, gentle buzz that only a room full of babies and toddlers can create🥰. So thank you all for coming along today for making it such a lovely morning🥰.

Huge congratulations to one of our lovely mums who has given birth to a gorgeous little boy❤️. We wish you all the very best and we shall all look forward to meeting him sometime in the near future🥰. Take care xx

We had excited squeals, lots and lots of smiles and of course great singing and signing from everyone🥰. The children were amazing with sharing the toys, waiting for their turns and joining in with all the activities❤️. It was lovely to see one of our youngest little boys looking, and trying to reach for one of our song props🥳. Well done x

Our signs for this week were 'WAIT' and 'YOUR TURN/MY TURN'. These are such important signs to use, as they support and develop a child's early interaction skills🥰, and they are so easy to use within their daily routines☺️.

Here are some easy tips for using these signs
WAIT - Play a READY STEADY Go game with cars🚗🚕 . Each of you have a car to push, when you are ready say, 'READY STEADY GO', if your child pushes his/her car before GO, say and sign 'WAIT' then have another try🥳. This also helps to support and develop their attention skills.
WAIT - When your child is very eager to try out the slide and there are other children before him/her, say and sign 'WAIT'

When we pass the instruments around, your children are understanding 'WAITING'🥳. Sometimes they come up to the box and try to take one before it is their turn, but when they hear the gentle word 'WAIT' they will put it back and wait for their turn. So as you can see by using words consistently they are understanding language🥰.

YOUR TURN/MY TURN - Roll the ball game. You can do this as a family, take turns rolling the ball to each other ⚽️. The adult starts with the ball, say and sign 'MY TURN' , then roll the ball to your child and say and sign 'HARRY'S TURN', continue this by taking turns with each member of the family. This game also helps to support and develop their eye contact👀.

YOUR TURN/MY TURN - Take turns playing the drum, your child has a turn first, you say and sign 'HARRY'S TURN', he then has to pass the drum to you and you say and sign 'MUMMY'S TURN'.
There may be tears at this point as he/she may not want to give it up just yet, but it's important for you to have a turn even if it's just a quick bang on the drum, as this will help with his understanding of taking turns😍.

We rounded off the morning with our circle songs - always a favourite with the little ones🤩.
STOP song - One of our young girls did a great job of spontaneously holding up her hand and saying 'STOP' when we had to 'STOP' and keep very still for a few moments 🤩. Well done to you, I think she is after my job 🤣.

A lovely way to spend the morning, that was full of small but meaningful moments 💕. Well done everyone xx

I shall look forward to seeing you all again next Wednesday🥰.

Happy signing, have a great week.

Another fun morning with the children at Incy Wincy’s Preschool - Bagworth🥰.

We had two great stories today for story time😊 - The first group of children chose 'There's A Monster In My House'😆 and the second group of children chose 'Silly Dizzy Dinosaur'🤣.

The children loved lifting the flaps to see if there WAS a monster in the house😂.Then, the young girl who found the little monster jumped and giggled when I said 'BOO' - after 1...2...3..., we all shouted 'BOO'🤣.

The children enjoyed tickling the 'Silly Dizzy Dinosaur'🦖 but they looked sad when he bumped his head and nose on the tree😢, but when they saw he had a plaster on his nose they looked pleased that he was better🥰 . The children enjoyed blowing kisses to him to say 'Goodbye'🤩.

We had some fantastic clapping out for foods today🥳, we had APPLE🍎👏👏, CAKE🧁👏 and CHICKEN NUGGETS👏👏👏👏.
We also had some animals and insects too🥳, we had PUPPY🐕👏👏, and LADYBIRD🐞👏👏👏. Well done everyone🥳

Thank you for a lovely morning, and I shall look forward to seeing you all next Friday😍.

Have fun🥰.

Hip Hip hooray for Half Term Wednesday🥰.
It was very cold today, but we soon warmed up with our singing and signing🥰I do have to say we had some beautiful singing today, great to hear so many voices🤩.

One of our families is about to give birth and it was lovely seeing her today - we hope all goes well, and do let us know when your little one arrives👼xx

Lovely to hear one of our younger girls today who was very vocal, and looking very happy and excited🥰. Even though she is still very young she knows how to express her needs or wants by looking at the story book she wanted which was - 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. I could tell she was excited as she was happily looking at the book and squealing with delight😍.Great communication, and she got to choose which book she wanted us to read🥳.

Our signs for this week were 'CAREFUL' and 'HURT'. Very useful signs, especially with toddlers☺️.

Use the 'CAREFUL' sign
When you are at the park and they are climbing up the slide, say and sign 'Be Careful'
Sing our Nappy Song to help you remember the sign
Older sibling helping with the baby - Be 'CAREFUL' with the baby, say and sign 'Be Careful'

Use the 'HURT' sign
If you see them fall over and bump their knee/head/arm say and sign 'Hurt', then hover your hand over the bumped knee or head or arm and say and sign 'HURT' again.
Pretend play - pretend their doll or teddy has hurt their knee, put a bandage around it and say and sign 'HURT'
Look at books such as 'Going to The Doctors', and point to the boy/girl who has a bandage on his/her knee or head and say and sign 'HURT'😥.

As you know sometimes when our children cry it can be difficult to know why they are crying, so by incorporating these signs within their play helps them to understand 'HURT', so if they have a tummy ache for example they will be able to do the sign for 'HURT' by their tummy.
Years ago one of our families told me that whenever her child was teething, her child would be crying, then she would open her mouth wide and frantically wave her hand by her mouth, letting mummy know her teeth hurt❤️. A-MAZ-ING.

We had some great listening for our 'Walking In The Jungle' song, we had a snake🐍 and an monkey 🐒. Well done 🥳

Thank you all for coming today, it was great to see you all 😍.

Have a fab week and I shall look forward to seeing you all again next Wednesday🥰.

Happy signing xx

We had such a lovely time at Sign & Rhyme this morning🥳. We gave a warm welcome to two new families😊. It was lovely meeting you all and I hope you enjoyed the session😊.

So adorable watching the children🥰 - and the adults😍 doing Roly Poly to one of our warm up songs❤️. Good waiting to go faster🤣🥳.

Our signs of the week are 'BATH' and ' WHERE'. Very useful signs to sign in your daily routine.
BATH - always say and sign this word when it is time for their bath. Then you can sing our bath time song with whatever toys they have in the bath. Lovely activity for bath time🥰

WHERE - This is a difficult sign for your little ones to understand at the moment, but you can do lots of activities around this word to help them along with their understanding.

WHERE - Hide one their favourite toys 🚕🧸🐇under a blanket, then say and sign 'WHERE', then lift the blanket to reveal their favourite toy.🥰

WHERE - Play a hide and seek game with their teddy🧸 or rabbit🐇. Hide the teddy then say and sign 'WHERE'S TEDDY?' then the two of you go looking for where it is.

WHERE - Story books with flaps. Children love lift the flap books, so you can say and sign 'WHERE' when you are looking for the objects/animals etc in the book🥰

A good choice of our story book today 🚂'CHOO CHOO'🚂, as this had lots of flaps for the children to lift to find the toys. So signing 'Where' for this was a great opportunity for them to hear and see the sign as well as them lifting the flaps🥳. Well done everyone🥰.

🎊 We had two birthdays that are coming up, so we sang 'Happy Birthday to Freddie 🎈🎈🎈and Elsie🎈🎈. WE all hope you have a lovely day🎊.

🥳I will be running my session next week in half term, so I shall look forward to seeing you again next Wednesday🥳. Siblings are always welcome too🥳.

Have a great week and happy signing🤗.

Marie🥰x
