Such a lovely two days at the Lactation Consultants Great Britain (LCGB) 30th anniversary conference! It was wonderful meeting new people and listening to so many exceptional speakers. Just a brilliant event all round.

Please do check out the work of the fantastic Gaza Infant Feeding Alliance (GINA) who are working so hard to support families with young babies.

Gina is an alliance working with Gazan mothers, doctors, midwives and nurses to provide newborns with expert breastfeeding supportΒ

Sometimes lactation consultants just have to get together to let our hair down over coffees!

Our ever enthralling list of conversation topics included exchanging trade secrets, our current ibclc bug bears, and favourite pumps.

Thanks for keeping me sane, pals! 😌

It’s a minefield for parents. The media would have you believe that tongue tie treatment is both a lucrative fad, and an elusive miracle cure for feeding issues (often in different articles posted by the same news outlets)!

The truth, as usual, is far more nuanced:

πŸ’š Good quality, early support with feeding is incredibly important

πŸ’š Most of us have a frenulum, but it is only termed a β€˜tongue tie’ if it is restricting tongue function

πŸ’š If a tongue tie is suspected, a feeding assessment should be carried out alongside an assessment of baby’s oral function by somebody skilled and qualified to do this

πŸ’š Some babies do benefit from having a tongue tie released to allow for better tongue movement to help with feeding

πŸ’š A tongue tie may be a significant factor in feeding issues, or it may be a β€˜piece of the puzzle’ alongside other contributors, or it may be not be the main cause of problems. A full assessment of the situation is key!

πŸ’š If a procedure is needed, this service should be equally accessible to families across the country.

What was your experience, for better or worse?

πŸ’š Here’s a gorgeous little boy I met today whose parents kindly allowed me to share his photos!

πŸ’š Baby breastfeeding fairly well but tiring easily and feeding frequently with this anterior tongue tie (anterior = closer to the tip of the tongue).

πŸ’š Note the classic β€˜heart shaped’ tongue as the frenulum restricts movement forwards and upwards.

πŸ’š You can see the difference in elevation before and after (the bottom photo shows baby lifting his tongue beautifully when relaxed after the procedure)!

πŸ’š Many babies can still latch and breastfeed with a tongue tie, with good support to ensure optimal positioning and attachment, however some babies (breast and bottle fed)! may benefit from a tongue tie release to ensure a smooth feeding journey

πŸ’š Some lovely laid back feeding for this gorgeous boy in my home clinic yesterday, to try to make latching a little smoother for him. It's often worth experimenting with various holds to see what works best, or feels most natural πŸ’š

Photo kindly sent by mum (parents often take photos during appointments to help them remember how baby was positioned)!

People often ask me how many tongue ties I treat…

While some babies absolutely do benefit from having a restrictive frenulum released, it’s also important to keep in mind that not all babies will need this in order to improve feeding issues! πŸ™‚

We urgently need to increase stocks of donor milk at The Hearts Milk Bank to help meet rising demand from hospitals. Last night our appeal was featured on ITV Anglia news, with interviews behind the scenes at the milk bank, and we hear from recipient mum Rebecca and milk donor Anisa who so kindly shared their stories. ❀️ Please help us spread the word and if you could help please get in touch on info@heartsmilkbank.org.
