What Makes Kefir So Powerful?
Kefir is made by fermenting milk with kefir grains – a naturally occurring symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts. Unlike yoghurt, kefir typically contains a wide diversity of microorganisms, often 30–50 different strains, including beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens, L. kefiri and Leuconostoc, alongside naturally occurring yeasts.
This microbial diversity is what makes kefir so interesting from a gut-health perspective.
Regular consumption of fermented foods like kefir has been shown to support the gut microbiome, aid digestion, and help maintain a healthy immune system, which in turn plays a role in overall wellbeing.
Kefir isn’t just another trendy health food – it’s a living culture, used for centuries in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. Slightly tangy, gently fizzy, and surprisingly versatile, it’s stood the test of time for a very good reason: it supports the body’s natural systems rather than promising quick fixes.
If you’re curious about making kefir at home, understanding how fermentation works, and learning how to use it safely and confidently, come and join my hands-on fermentation workshop. Expect science, tradition, and practical know-how you can actually use — no lab coat required.
