Understanding Anxiety in Teens

Recognising anxiety in adolescents is crucial for timely support. Common signs include avoiding school or social situations, difficulty concentrating, unexplained physical complaints, and irritability. As a psychiatrist with over 12 years of experience, I've seen how early intervention can make a significant difference. Our training programs equip parents and educators with the tools to support anxious teens effectively.

This is the feedback I had from my last course

"Really interesting course. Made me think how to change my practice and make the school environment better for the student. Will defiantly recommend the course to the rest of the pastoral team"

"This was an excellent course. It went at just the right pace and was really interesting and informative. I liked the structure of having the workbook to work through independently, combined with the online learning. I think there were just the right number of people on the course, enabling us all to speak and contribute. Cheryl was great - really patient, calm and she really held my interest."

"Very knowledge and professional instructor. Helped to adapt the learning to our environment. Good course content."

So invest in your teams mental health today.

Mental Health Awareness Week is here, and this year the theme is anxiety.

We may all experience anxiety at some point in our lives. It can come as mild uneasiness, a panic attack, or a range of feelings in between.

In a recent survey by the Mental Health Foundation, a quarter of adults said they felt so anxious it stopped them from doing the things they want to do some or all the time.

If anxiety is affecting someone’s day-to-day work or life, there are things you can try that may help to support them.

I am currently being supported by The Lions - a mentoring programme for Christians setting up a business or charity. We have been set a challenge to raise money to provide bicycles for a group of Ukrainians who have been housed by IM Group in a beautiful manor house. So I have organised this board game evening in Clarendon park, Leicester.
Please support us either by coming or by giving to https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/refugee-bikes

Even therapists have therapist. But I was thinking that as mental health first aiders in your workplace do you have anyone you can off load to, or go to for advice when something difficult comes along? Do you find yourself taking on others troubles as you listen to them and lie awake at night wondering how you can help them? Do you feel unsupported in your role and like there is no one who you can talk to about it? I know I have struggled with this in the past.

So that got me thinking what if we created a place for mental health first aiders to come together, share their burdens, and learn more about how to support people with mental health issues in the workplace. So that you don't feel overwhelmed and unsupported as you help others.

I am just at the ideas stage, but I have a plan to build a community of mental health first aiders where you can come together to share the things on your mind with other people in the same role. Where we could have regular drop ins to talk it through, with monthly teaching sessions to increase your knowledge further.

If you are interested in joining as a founding member you will get the chance to help shape this community and will keep the low founding member price of just £5 per month, As this grows bigger the price will have to go up, so get on board early. Message me before May 4th (Starwars day) to reserve your place.

Continuing my series on Psychosis

What are hallucinations?

Hallucinations are when you experience something through your senses without there being any external stimulus for it. So in layman's terms seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting or feeling something when there is nothing there.

Many people have hallucinations when they are tired, stressed or physically unwell. I remember my son when he was 2 had a high temperature and screamed for two hours because he could see things that were disturbing. These sort of hallucinations do not mean you have psychosis if the other symptoms of psychosis (delusions and thought disorder) are not present. However in psychosis the hallucinations can be just as scary.

Hearing voices is very common in schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses. These are experienced as if you were actually hearing something, rather than the internal voice most people have. The voices can be talking directly to you, or there may be several that are talking about you. They can be load or quiet and can go on and on throughout the day. When you think what that must be like for the people that experience it it is no wonder that it can be very distressing and difficult to live with.

Continuing in my series on Psychosis I will answer this question that was asked.

Does Psychosis exist on its own or is it always a symptom of another broader condition?

Psychotic episodes, where someone experiences hallucinations, delusions and thought disorder as well as other symptoms can last from a couple of hours to years depending on the cause and treatment.

You can have a psychotic episode without it being part of a broader condition, particularly when that psychotic episode has been bought on by stress, medication, or sleeplessness. However psychotic episodes are frequently part of something else like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression or drug use.

If you have any more questions about psychosis feel free to drop me a message or write in the comments.
