⚽ Playing sports is not without risk, particularly if you are playing one that is considered high impact, such as rugby. 🏉 But what are the most common sporting injuries?
🩻 Fractures
A fracture can occur either by a direct or indirect force on the body. It will be very painful and requires immediate medical attention. The main things to remember when treating a suspected fracture is to support the area, control external bleeding, cover any open wounds and pack around any protruding bone. Also, make sure to check for circulation below the injury at regular intervals.
💪 Sprains and strains
Soft tissue injuries are incredibly common and can occur when the joint is twisted, or the ligament is stretched or torn.
The best way to treat these injuries is through the PRICE Method: Protect, Rest, Ice, Comfort, Elevate.
🦴 Dislocations
Dislocations is the term used when a bone is displaced from its natural position in a joint. If this happens during a game or sporting event, do NOT attempt to put it back into place, simply steady and support the area until professional help arrives.
🧠 Concussions
A concussion can occur when a player suffers a blow to the head causing a disturbance in the brain. It has the potential for serious consequences so must always be treated seriously.
If you suspect a conscious casualty has a concussion, seek medical advice. Due to the nature of this injury a casualty may seem fine but can deteriorate quickly.
🔁 Repetitive Strain injuries
Injuries such as tennis elbow and rotator cuff injuries commonly occur as a result of repeatedly moving the joint and putting strain on the muscles and ligaments. In most cases of injuries due to wear and tear the best way to treat them is through resting the area, physiotherapy and hot and cold therapy. If it persists or you suspect you may have a rotator cuff injury it is best to seek medical advice to ensure it is not more serious.
