🎆 Flying sparks, smoke, and firework debris can cause serious eye injuries in seconds, making eye wash essential in any first aid kit at this time of year.

👁️ But would you know how to use it if something went wrong?

🚿 Here’s what to do if someone gets something in their eye:

1. Stay calm and act fast – get them seated and reassure them.
2. Open the eye gently – use clean hands or gloves.
3. Flush the eye with sterile eye wash – from the inner corner outward.
4. Rinse continuously for at least 10 minutes if it’s a chemical or serious irritant.
5. Seek medical help immediately if pain continues or a burn is suspected.

💡 Tip: Don’t let them rub their eyes – it could make the injury worse.

We train first aiders to act quickly and efficiently in eye emergencies because every second counts.

❤️ Using an AED can increase the chance of a casualty’s survival, particularly if it is administered quickly. But how do you use them? Do you need training?

It is easy to use an AED, anyone can do it even without any prior training as the device will talk you through the instructions once it has been switched on.

❗If you are the first to find the casualty, do not leave them unattended, ask someone nearby to get the AED.

1. Switch it on – some will switch on automatically when you lift the lid, others will have an on/off button.

2. Follow the instructions given by the AED:
a. Attach the pads to the casualty’s chest – diagrams are available on the pads to ensure you know the correct positions.
b. Stop CPR when instructed and ensure no one else touches the casualty.
c. Continue CPR if and when advised.

Book your place on our AED Defibrillator Training course or any first aid course today to gain experience and further understanding of how to use an AED:

⚽ Playing sports is not without risk, particularly if you are playing one that is considered high impact, such as rugby. 🏉 But what are the most common sporting injuries?

🩻 Fractures
A fracture can occur either by a direct or indirect force on the body. It will be very painful and requires immediate medical attention. The main things to remember when treating a suspected fracture is to support the area, control external bleeding, cover any open wounds and pack around any protruding bone. Also, make sure to check for circulation below the injury at regular intervals.

💪 Sprains and strains
Soft tissue injuries are incredibly common and can occur when the joint is twisted, or the ligament is stretched or torn.
The best way to treat these injuries is through the PRICE Method: Protect, Rest, Ice, Comfort, Elevate.

🦴 Dislocations
Dislocations is the term used when a bone is displaced from its natural position in a joint. If this happens during a game or sporting event, do NOT attempt to put it back into place, simply steady and support the area until professional help arrives.

🧠 Concussions
A concussion can occur when a player suffers a blow to the head causing a disturbance in the brain. It has the potential for serious consequences so must always be treated seriously.
If you suspect a conscious casualty has a concussion, seek medical advice. Due to the nature of this injury a casualty may seem fine but can deteriorate quickly.

🔁 Repetitive Strain injuries
Injuries such as tennis elbow and rotator cuff injuries commonly occur as a result of repeatedly moving the joint and putting strain on the muscles and ligaments. In most cases of injuries due to wear and tear the best way to treat them is through resting the area, physiotherapy and hot and cold therapy. If it persists or you suspect you may have a rotator cuff injury it is best to seek medical advice to ensure it is not more serious.

🐝 Insect stings typically improve within a few days without the need for medical attention, but how do you remove anything that has been left behind on the skin, or alleviate the symptoms that follow?

🐝 With summer in full swing and insect stings being one of the most common injuries at this time of year, we decided to make a list of what to do and what not to do if you or someone you know get stung.

✔️ Do
💳 Brush or scrape the stinger sideways with your fingernail or the edge of a bank card.
💧 Wash the area with soap and water.
🧊 Put an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, or a clean cloth soaked in cold water, on the bite or sting for at least 20 minutes, if it's swollen.
⬆️ Keep the area raised if you can.
💊 Take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen if the sting is painful.
💊 Use antihistamines to relieve any itching.
🧴Use a hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and swelling.

❌ Don’t
🦠 Do not scratch the bite or sting, as it could get infected.
❌ Do not use home remedies to treat the bite or sting.
☠️ Do not use tweezers to pull out a stinger as you could squeeze poison out of it.

🧑‍🏫 Our first aid courses, cover how to treat a sting and more. Enrol to learn how you can provide first aid in multiple situations, contact our team today:
