💜 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a procedure performed to sustain the life of a casualty in cardiac arrest. This is because using this procedure the first aider is able to manually oxygenate and pump the casualty’s blood to preserve brain function 🧠.
To perform CPR, you should:
1. Ensure the casualty is on a firm, flat surface.
2. Place the heel of one hand ✋ in the centre of the chest, placing the other hand on top of the first.
3. Compress the chest (up to a max depth of approximately 5-6cm) 30 times at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. The compressions and releases should take the same amount of time.
4. After 30 compressions, open the airway again using head tilt/chin lift.
5. Seal the nostrils 👃 with your thumb and forefinger.
6. Within 10 seconds, you will need to have blown 2 effective rescue breaths into the casualty’s mouth. 🌬️ Start by blowing into the mouth for 1 second.
7. Remove your mouth to the side and inhale some fresh air.
8. 🌬️ Blow into the mouth again for 1 second so you have given 2 effective rescue breaths in total within 10 seconds.
9. Return your hands to the correct position on the chest and give a further 30 chest compressions. After this, try again with 2 rescue breaths.
10. Continue CPR until:
a. The casualty shows signs of recovery ❤️🩹
b. Emergency services arrive 🚑
c. You become exhausted and unable to continue 😴
d. The situation changes and you are now in immediate danger ⚡
