From around 1903 to 1958, Letchworth Garden City enforced a ban on public houses and the sale of alcohol. This policy was introduced by the town’s early founders and residents, many of whom were wealthy social reformers, spiritualists, and pacifists who formed a strong influence within the community at the time. The ban was intended to address social problems such as domestic violence, drunkenness, and poverty. Ebenezer Howard, the founder of the Garden City movement, supported this approach. In place of pubs, Letchworth encouraged the development of cafés, clubs, and community halls to promote healthier forms of social life.
