Reconnect your mind with your stomach, ask yourself are you really hungry.

Eating when you’re not hungry has a temporary calming affect effect on the body. Our brain chemistry changes, and we feel more relaxed. But if our physical and mental health suffers from eating when we are not hungry, then in the long run we are simply adding to our problems.

So, ask yourself - Do you know when you are hungry? - This seems like a silly question to ask, but have you become disconnected from your hunger. Some people haven’t felt physical hunger in years. If everyone ate only when they were physically hungry then it’s likely they would be able to manage their weight a lot easier. But we all know that there are lots of reasons that we eat: sadness, loneliness, happiness, boredom, just because the clock says it’s time, because the food just looks good, because we want to celebrate, because we’re with friends and its sociable.

Give mindful eating a go, notice each mouthful, eat slowly and in your mind follow your foods journey down to the stomach, constantly checking in to how your stomach feels, asking if it’s had enough - start reconnecting your mind to your stomach

Eating Type Variations:

What does eating type mean?

Eating type literally means how, when or why you eat. There are many eating types and here is a list that you may identify with:

Emotional Eater: This eater eats when feeling any emotion, either good or bad. Eats when feeling any emotion, they could be happy, sad, lonely, depressed, anxious, tired, in fact, just any emotion!

Mindless Eater, Unconscious Eater or Entertainment Eaters: This eater has no clue what they are eating because they are mindlessly eating. Maybe watching television, a movie or reading. This person eats regular meals, but mindlessly snacks!

Stress Eater: This eater eats when stress is overwhelming because food is calming, especially snack foods!

Night-time Nibbler: This eater eats little during the day and eats over 50% of calories between dinner and bedtime.

Frugal Eater or Clean Plate Eater: This eater does not like to waste food! Just keeps eating, even when full. they must finish the entire plate.

Stealth Eater: This eater has hidden stashes of food everywhere that no one knows about.

Weekend Cheaters: This eater eats fairly well during the week but goes hog wild on the weekends!

Monday Dieters or Diet Atoners: Usually weekend cheaters are Monday Dieters. Eating loads over the weekend then start a diet on the Monday but the motivation fades during the week.

Big Portions: This eater loves to eat huge quantities of foods at all meals!

Convenience Eaters or Eaters on the Run: This eater eats almost all processed foods from a bag, box or fast-food restaurant, frozen or microwaveable. Eating on the go and they believe they don’t have the time to cook.

Regular Eater or Blissfully Unaware Eater: Eats everything, without thinking of what they are eating.

There are other eating types too, such as the person that throws themselves into the day without eating anything, then gets so hungry that they eat the first high carb, high fat thing that they find.

Take a good look at the eating types above and ask yourself if you have one or more of these habits. We often have a mixture and it’s not abnormal to have 4 or 5 different eating habits that make up your own personal relationship with food. Note down your thoughts on this.

Have you ever brainstormed your own relationship with food? It will help you see your own eating habits from a more objective view.

Why not give it a go, don’t overthink it, simply write down everything that comes into your mind and then highlight anything that you believe signifies your regular approach to food.

Examples would be:
• I eat when I’m bored.
• I comfort eat.
• I am unable to stop eating sugar.
• I view food as a social occasion or a treat.

ARGH, I was watching a diet documentary on TV yesterday. They actually said the average person starts a diet 3 times a year. How does that make you feel?

If diets haven’t worked for you then here’s a better way to do it:

Did you know that we know more about the causes and treatment of anxiety-based disorders than any other disorders?

Your brain has the ability to change its structures and reorganise its patterns of responding, it doesn’t have to react to the anxiety in this way, your brain is capable of changing your feelings, thoughts & responses.

Together we can look at what creates anxiety and how can we influence the process of the rewiring your brain to lead you to live the life that you want to live.

Anxiety usually affects around 16% of the population at any one time, but with the current situation I wonder what the figure is now?

Please be assured that having raised levels of anxiety at the moment is totally normal as it's our body’s response to a stressful situation.

Stress (a condition related to anxiety) is the second most reported ill-health condition with respect to work-related problems; yet anxiety is something we all feel, so when and how does this normal mechanism, cause us problems? And most importantly how can we regain control of it?

Anxiety becomes problematic, when we are not able to manage it, control it or harness it, when it gets in the way of us doing things that we want to do or when we spend our lives fearing it and avoiding it.

Anxiety itself can cause psychological and behavioural symptoms such as:

• Intense fear
• Fear you are ‘going mad’
• Restlessness, fidgeting, inability to concentrate
• Sense of impending danger
• Nervousness feeling ‘on edge’
• Impatience
• Irritability
• Being easily distracted
• Sleep difficulties – Insomnia
• Detachment from surroundings

Anxiety can also cause physical symptoms including:
• Rapid heartbeat
• Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
• Shortness of breath
• Shallow breathing
• Dizziness
• Stomach discomfort/pain/nausea
• Diarrhoea/ increased bowel movements
• Drowsiness and tiredness
• Hypersensitivity
• Pins and needles
• Tense aching muscles
• Dry mouth
• Sweating (which may have a different smell)
• Headache
• Excessive thirst
• Frequent urinating
• Irregular periods (painful/missed)
• Insomnia – sleep difficulties
• Shaking
• Difficulty Swallowing
