It's been a while since I last posted but I have spent a lot of time with my Diabetes Support Group which has celebrated its first anniversary recently. When I offer them nutritional advice they always seem surprised that I recommend eating cheese, cooking with butter and lard and not avoiding full fat milk. As these all contain saturated fat they say "are you trying to give me a heart attack?" The simple answer is that saturated fat is not, and has never been, the bad guy in our diet. That title must go to the evil trio of sugar, wheat flour and industrial seed oils. This article from Natural Heart Doctor Jack Wolfson explains the history behind the demonization of saturated fat and the role played by Dr. Ancel Keys. We all need to understand how healthy, natural foods have been replaced by harmful, processed foods over the last 70 years. This story is rarely mentioned by the mainstream media as they are mostly supported, financially, by the manufacturers of this harmful, processed food. Knowledge is power in this fight for a long, healthy life. What you don't know CAN harm you. 🙂

I am occasionally asked why I strongly recommend the use of butter over margarine. There are many reasons but the most important reason is that we were persuaded to switch to margarine because butter was allegedly causing heart disease and heart attacks. That was a lie but the majority of people, including doctors, still believe it. The same goes for saturated fat which is always described as "artery clogging saturated fat". Another reason for liking butter on vegetables is that vitamins A,D,E and K need to be transported with fat to improve their availability to the body. This recent post from 'Green Med Info' goes into the demonization of butter and saturated fat which started around 100 years ago but increased in 1955 when Ancel Keys first suggested that cholesterol caused heart attacks and saturated fat raised cholesterol. This hypothesis was never proven despite years of trying but the nutritional guidelines of USA and the UK were changed in 1977 and 1983 respectively to encourage the switch from fats to carbohydrates as our main fuel. The rest, as they say, is history. Obesity started to rise as did cases of diabetes. Over 50% of Americans are now obese and we are not far behind them. So I repeat my recommendation that we load up on butter, meat, fish, eggs, cheese and all the other things that contain fats and proteins and start to reduce carb intake for the sake of our health and our waistlines.

These are my favourite visual aids from Dr. David Unwin. They explain quite graphically how the foods that we eat are transformed into glucose (sugar) as soon as we eat them. For many people it is difficult to comprehend how a savoury dish can turn into so much sugar. These can be saved and printed out to be stuck on your bread bin or fridge as a reminder. The fight against diabetes can be difficult but knowledge is a powerful weapon.🙂 I recently posted this in my new Facebook group - Reversing Diabetes in Lewes.

Back onto the subject of weight loss drugs again. This story comes from The Express last week. Dr. Unwin is explaining that there is a cheaper, and safer, alternative to weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic. He is correct in stating that low carb diets are successful at helping his patients lose weight. The only problem is that it takes a little bit of effort for people to learn what you can and can't eat on a low carb diet. For six months I have been sharing this knowledge with our Type 2 Diabetes Support Group and I have to say that quite a few of our attendees have lost some weight, reduced their blood glucose levels and say that they no longer feel addicted to carbs. Dr. Unwin currently has 150 patients that have put their Diabetes into remission. I am hoping to be able to report similar successes when our attendees next get their HbA1c tested. With Xmas arriving shortly we will all be tempted to eat more than we would normally eat. Some of that food might be cakes, biscuits and sweets. We know that this is not what our body needs or wants but sometimes it just tastes too good to stop. This is a difficult time of year to be Diabetic as these foods raise blood glucose levels much quicker than real foods would. Doctors would recommend you take more Metformin or inject more insulin but the real solution is to just eat real food. At this time of year it is not difficult to find meat or fish that can be served with a selection of vegetables but instead we choose the sweet options because they are convenient and they are also addictive. I found this series of videos from Public Health Collaboration very helpful and I hope that some of you will too. Have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. 🙂

There is no perfect diet for every human on this planet. We are all unique and so we all need personalized advice. Having said that there are many generalizations that can be applied to most people without causing problems. This article from Dr. Jockers lists those generalizations and explains why they are recommended for most. I've never seen so much detailed advice on one web page before. Even if you only read the first few paragraphs and applied the advice I'm sure you could improve your health. Perhaps you could add it to your bookmarks and read a section every week. I don't expect anyone will read all of it in one sitting. If you have any questions or if something has been left out you know how to contact me. Together we can all get healthier. 🙂 Keep it real. 👍

Here is a Youtube video featuring Jeremy Clarkson. He talks about his latest health scare where he honestly thought he was having a heart attack. He wasn't, but the NHS took the opportunity to give him a load of Nutritional advice that goes totally against what a proper Nutritional Therapist would advise. The gentleman offering his opinions on what Jeremy says is right to criticize the advice he intends to follow. Jeremy is a farmer that breeds top quality organic sheep, pigs and cows. He now believes that it is dangerous to his health to eat his own produce. Worse than that is the fact that he now thinks egg yolks are bad for him too. We need to make sure that everyone understands that the food that is likely to shorten our healthy lives is the food which has been invented and produced in factories over the last 50 years, not the food that we have been eating for 300,000 years. This video highlights a problem that I have been talking about for several years. Doctors just don't get taught about the value of good nutrition in the fight against disease, especially chronic disease. I am currently giving nutritional advice at our local Type 2 Diabetes Support Group in Lewes. Most of our attendees tell me that their Doctors have never discussed the importance of Nutrition in the care of T2 Diabetes. They just don't seem to realise that there's an alternative to prescribing medication to lower blood glucose. Contact me if this is something you'd like to know more about.
