Did you get last week's Spirometry Quiz question right?
Q3: If a patient’s spirometry demonstrates a normal FEV1/FVC ratio but has a low FVC, what condition might this indicate?
Correct answer: B. Restrictive lung disease

🔵A low Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) with a normal FEV1/FVC ratio may be indicative of restrictive lung disease.
🔵Further lung function tests such as plethysmography or gas washout are required to measure Total Lung Capacity (TLC) and Residual Volume (RV). These cannot be measured with spirometry but are needed to confirm and identify the nature of restriction.
🔵Lung function test results should be interpreted alongside patient reported symptoms, for example increased shortness of breath.
