Medial Shin splints

These kind involve the inner shin, where the fascia gets caught and overworking trying to rip the fascia off the bone. Very painful.
Common causes are underactive glutes, sometimes quads in these cases.

For the young man in, it was Tibialis Posterior overworking for Glute Max distal fibres. He's had these for 6 years and seen many peoples with no success.

The funny thing was no one really released the medial shins and the main advice he heard was calf raises!! This will actually engage the inner/posterior muscles and make it worse!

(4 weeks in, so far so good. He hasnt pushed it yet and wanting to give it time to heal. February will be a good test. Session 2 and 3, getting so much easier to work on with session 3 being almost hard to find!
Another update. 10 running sessions increasing from 1km to 4km and no issues so far. We are well pleased!)

A Pulled Muscle

We have all used this phrase. and yes it does exist but if were being technical, there is no such thing!!

We can't pull a muscle in the true sense, it would have to be like tearing the muscle off the bone as the case of a grade 3 tear to truely "pull" it

BUT

It's only just a phrase, like having a slipped disc. It is a real issue that causes very real pain. IT IS an adhesion in the muscle that needs released. I fix these on patients all day, every day.

PS, i still like calling it a pulled muscle, or pulled ligament, or a pulled tendon. My father before me called them exactly that and sorted out many a pain.

Hamstrings always tight?

Maybe its neural tension from the sciatic nerve. A nerve sliding technique will greatly help this.

It could also be weak glutes, overactive hip flexors or maybe, just maybe you dont stretch your hamstrings enough!

I always had tight hamstrings. what was the reason for mines? Possibly all of the above but constant stretching over a few weeks has definitely lengthened them. Its nice to be fit to touch my toes! Consistency is the key

Tennis elbow can be a real curse. Pain will be on the outside of the elbow at a definate point. There are 3 good tests to diagnose it I use.

Commonly the tests are sore and weak. The problem tends to be the flexors of the forearm. Its pretty much like golfers elbow (inside of elbow) masquerading as tennis elbow.

It amazes me the amount of sports people do no rehab of any kind or very little.

I myself run half marathon distance and between stretches, strength work, compression boots and foam rolling, I do a fair bit to try and keep myself injury free.

Even diet, I take multi-vitamins and magnesium as its good for muscle recovery and energy.

Prevention is better than cure.

Alignment is a big deal. It definitely helps for the majority of people to be neutral but not for everyone.

Had a man in with an anatomically short leg by a good 15mm. We corrected this with a heel lift but it actually give him a sore back surprisingly! He came in because of tight legs all the time.
As you can guess we removed the heel lift. We can be functionally disfunctional!!

Sore back but happily touch toes!

I seen this woman years ago with constant nagging back pain so did the usual and asked history etc and started doing a movement screen.

She bent down and put the palms of her hands on the floor as easy as anything. I was shocked! Yoga this would be similar to the Pike pose.

So now your asking the question of HOW? We did some more tests and her hips were loose! They felt like they were rattling around in the joint. She has very weak glutes. She cleaned a lot hence bending over a lot and flexible but the key to fixing her pain was to strengthen the glutes.
