Keeping Medicines Safe at Home

To help prevent accidents and misuse, NHS Lincolnshire ICB and Lincolnshire County Council have shared some key safety tips for keeping medicines safe at home:

· Store all medications out of reach and sight — ideally in a locked cabinet or box.

· Never leave tablets or medicines loose in handbags, drawers, or on counters.

· Keep medicines in their original packaging with clear labels and instructions.

· Dispose of unused or expired medication safely — most pharmacies offer free disposal services.

· Talk openly with family members, including teenagers and elderly relatives, about the dangers of taking medication that isn’t theirs.

We wanted to highlight Night Light Cafe Lincoln

Night Light Cafés are safe spaces that offer an out-of-hours, non-clinical support service and are staffed by teams of trained volunteers who are available to listen. They can also provide signposting advice and information on other organisations that may be able to help with specific needs.

Night Light Cafes is a free service that helps people to have better access to face-to-face help when they are struggling in an evening, when practices and community mental health teams are less readily available.

You can self-refer by calling 0300 011 1200 or via Instagram DM or Facebook Messenger Night Light Cafe Lincoln

3-9th November marks . The focus this year is how we can all help make medicines safer.

The Yellow Card Scheme is the UK’s voluntary scheme for reporting adverse drug reactions.
The scheme is managed by the MHRA and the Commission of Human Medicines, so any reports help safeguard public health.

You only need to suspect a reaction was caused by a medicine to report it

If you are worried about a symptom, you think may be a side effect:
1) Check the leaflet supplied with the medicine. It lists known side effects and what to do
2) Talk to a healthcare professional such as a doctor, pharmacist or nurse.

When to report
You can report suspected side effects of any medicine, vaccine, complimentary medicines (e.g. herbal or homeopathic)

Anyone can report a suspected side effect to the Yellow Card Scheme
• Online at www.yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/
• Using paper forms from pharmacies or GP surgeries
• By phone 0808 100 3352
• By downloading the free Yellow Card app
