“When the system stops rewarding patience, people stop being patient.”

Ron read a provocative article recently that argues a whole generation has turned to gambling (crypto, sports betting, prediction markets) because the traditional pathways to “success” are functionally broken. The old bargain of show up, work hard for 30 years, get rewarded doesn’t exist anymore.

The essay’s argument is that this makes sense. When your options are “definitely stuck” versus “probably stuck but with a small chance of escape,” the second option wins every time. The casino is the only place many people feel any agency at all.

But we tend to take our attitudes towards one idea, and carry them into the next. And the body is still in the old days. Safe and slow and traditional is still the approach that works for it.

You can’t skip the stress, because the body needs the signal. You can’t skip the recovery, because that’s when the actual building happens. You can’t rush the timeline, because tissue adaptation has its own clock and it doesn’t care about yours.

Maybe the body is the one place you can still trust the process.

The body doesn’t take bets. It takes work.

If you have a couple of minutes, read and share your thoughts 🙂

If you didn’t already know - we write a weekly newsletter on Substack called The Active Edge ✍️

It’s our little corner of the internet where we share thoughts on performance, psychology, recovery, and training, and what it really looks like to pursue something fully - whatever the endeavour.

We’re not trying to be gurus. We just enjoy writing, learning out loud, and exploring the messy, fascinating stuff that comes with trying to get the best out of yourself (or helping someone else do the same).

Some recent favourites:
👯 How to Lose A Goal in 10 Days – Shane delivers a hilarious anti-guide to sabotaging your own goals. A tongue-in-cheek reminder that recovery, realism, and self-awareness still beat ego and hype.

🤓 What Now? Updating the Feedback Loop – Ronny reflects on that quiet post-race moment and why it’s the perfect time to ask deeper questions - about identity, goals, and what your next challenge really means.

🎯 Post-event Recovery: A Simple Guide to Getting Back on Track – Yasmin shares a no-nonsense guide to post-race recovery - covering hydration, sleep, movement, and when to book that sports massage.

🫣 “It’s Not Me, It’s …” – Nicole unpacks why we blame traffic when we fall short and credit mindset when we succeed.

We’d love for you to check it out if that sounds like your kind of thing - or just to be nosey and see what we’re rambling about each week 😄
