When the World Feels Too Loud… 🌪️

Sometimes your child’s nervous system just needs a little extra help to feel calm, safe, and focused 🧠💛

Here are some OT-approved calming tools you can try at home:

🛏️ Deep pressure – Using weighted blankets, tight hugs, or compression clothing
🧘‍♀️ Slow movement – Doing some gentle stretching, rocking, or yoga
🎧 Noise reduction – Using headphones, ear defenders, or a quiet corner
💡 Soft lighting or sunglasses – Reduce harsh or bright lights
🌿 Breathing & grounding exercises – Belly breathing, counting breaths, or mindful touch

These strategies aren’t “just tricks.”
They help regulate your child’s nervous system so they can feel safe, calm, and ready to engage.

Let us know...
Which of these helps your child (or even you!) calm down? 💛👇

Two Children Can Have Two Very Different Sensory Needs 👧👦

Every child experiences the world differently and their sensory needs can look very different.

They may..
Be sensory seekers 🤸‍♂️
Crave movement, pressure, or noise
Love jumping, crashing, spinning, or fidgeting
Often need extra sensory input to feel “regulated”
Sensory avoiders 🙉
Feel overwhelmed easily
Prefer quiet, calm, and low-stimulation environments
May cover ears, avoid crowds, or withdraw

Some children are a mix 🌀 and they might seek input in one sense (like touch) and avoid in another (like sound)

Why this matters for parents 💡
Understanding if your child is seeking, avoiding, or both helps you support them with the right sensory tools, instead of trying to “stop the behaviour.”

Let us know below if you notice your child seeking 🤸‍♂️, avoiding 🙉, or both 🌀...

Sensory Dysregulation Doesn’t Look the Same for Every Child...

Two children can be dysregulated and this can look completely different 👀

Sensory dysregulation might look like:
🙉 Covering ears, avoiding noisy spaces, or melting down in crowds
🤸 Constantly moving, crashing, or seeking deep pressure
🪑 Difficulty focusing, sitting still, or following instructions
😡💧 Big emotional outbursts or going very quiet and withdrawn
😴😬 Fatigue, irritability, anxiety, or feeling “on edge”

Important reminder 💛👇
Dysregulation isn’t a choice and it is not a parenting failure.

Let us know below...
Which of these signs feel familiar in your child (or even in yourself)? 👇💬

Sensory Challenges Aren’t Just for Children

When we talk about sensory regulation, it’s easy to think it’s just a “child thing.”

But sensory regulation affects all of us.

Sensory regulation can impact:
👶 Children and adults
🧠 Neurodivergent individuals
💭 People with anxiety or trauma histories
🌱 Highly sensitive individuals
😴 Anyone experiencing stress, illness, or burnout

It’s not about being “too sensitive.”

It’s about how the nervous system processes the world.

When we understand this, we can respond with empathy and model healthy regulation for our children.

Did you know...

You Have More Than 5 Senses 👀👂✋

Your child’s body is working with 8 sensory systems every day.
Here’s a quick breakdown ⬇️

The familiar ones:
👀 Sight – what we see
👂 Sound – what we hear
✋ Touch – textures, pressure, temperature
👅 Taste
👃 Smell

The ones we don’t talk about enough:
🧍 Proprioception – body awareness (where your body is in space)
🤸 Vestibular – movement, balance, spinning, jumping
❤️ Interoception – internal cues like hunger, thirst, tiredness, and emotions

When one or more of these systems is overwhelmed or under-supported, we often see sensory dysregulation, especially in children.

Understanding which sense is struggling helps us choose the right support, not just manage the behaviour.

Let us know below...
Which sense do you or your child seem most sensitive to?

Sensory Dysregulation

Over the next few weeks, we’re talking about sensory dysregulation.
What it is.
What it looks like.
And practical tools to help children regulate.

So let’s start here ⬇️

What Does Sensory Dysregulation Look Like in Children? 🤔

Ever notice your child fall apart the moment they get home?
That’s not “bad behaviour.”
It’s their nervous system saying “I’ve had enough.”

Sensory dysregulation can look like:
- Ripping clothes off as soon as they walk in the door
- Only eating a small number of “safe” foods
- Biting toys, clothing, themselves, or others
- Crashing into and off furniture or throwing their body around
- Big emotions that seem to come out of nowhere

Your child isn’t being difficult.
They’re dysregulated and communicating the only way they can.
You’re not doing anything wrong.
Support starts with understanding 💛
