It’s true. There is no such thing as a ā€œmild tongue tie.ā€

To accurately assess for a tongue tie, it’s important that your baby has a full oral assessment from a trained practitioner. No amount of peering in through your babies open or crying mouth will tell you if your baby does or does not have an oral restriction. Why? Because tongue ties are so much more than just how they look. When assessing a tongue tie, it’s important that you consider history of feeding, health history, oral function, symptoms and feeding difficulties, and often observing a feed not just the tongues appearance. What does MILD even mean! 🫣

If your having difficulties with your breast or bottle fed baby, and your concerned it may be a tongue tie, please reach out to someone who is qualified to assess and give tailored follow-up support. It’s more than just a quick snip!

Were you told your baby had a mild tongue tie?

Things parents tell me… infant feeding & tongue tie clinic edition:
Frequently parents will tell me they were told Tongue ties don’t affect bottle feeding babies. āŒ This is not the case. We know that bottle fed babies can struggle with oral function issues too and can display symptoms like breastfed babies. One I hear all too often, is: your baby has a tongue tie, it’s only mild though, so shouldn’t affect feeding. āŒ Lots of health professionals have a wealth of experience with feeding and tongue ties. But unless someone has done a full tongue function assessment how can they assess it to be mild? A Quick Look won’t cut the mustard! āŒ Babies are NOT lazy. Babies are new to feeding, they’re learning, we’re learning, if they’re falling asleep or finding it hard, let’s address the root cause, and not just assume a baby is being lazy. If you’ve been told any of these things, and you’re struggling with feeding your baby, reach out to a specialist who can help you!
