REGULATION CREATION 🌈

I was very blessed to be sent this amazing photo by one of my parents to show an AMAZING rainbow create by blow pens.

I’m am so happy being able to share ideas and creative ways to build in core regulation skills and make them fun, functional and getting a level of ā€œbuy inā€ from the young person to want to build in key regulation skills to improve overall regulation.

Sometimes the best things really are the simplest. Not overthought or over complicated just nice easy practical things.

I want to thank my amazing families I work with and especially the lovely parent who shared this picture and made my day very bright like the rainbow created 🧔

CAKE ALWAYS WINS

I am very lucky to be able to have meetings at a garden centre that sells the BIGGEST slices of cake you ever did see.

Now you would think the photo would do it justice but it doesn’t. It’s so much cake you can barely finish it. But you know what why an absolute bloody treat it is.

I’ve been putting together a training masterclass and Ebook for Online Safety this week and one thing I have reflected on the most is balance vs extinction and this fits in all walks of life.

Sure, that slice of cake is packed tonne full of everything that is probably bad for you, but it’s hella tasty and why would I not give myself a treat. Everyone needs incentive in life to work hard and that’s what I’ve said when it comes to online safety, social media, gaming and all digital things when working with children and young people. It’s all about balance

There has to be a level of buy in to do something. Especially with an ADHD brain like mine…. This makes the meetings sweeter, more productive and allows us to talk through all the stuff we need to do. It’s safe to say February and March are going to be a wild ride…. New courses, masterclasses, conferences, CPD, lots of clients.

So if you need that slice of cake, eat it and then do your thing. We only get one time round this carousel. Be bold, be balanced and do your thing.

Cake connoisseur out !

ā¤ļø DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO ā¤ļø

I had the pleasure recently of running a project for anxiety in a primary school. The project was a great success and the children did fantastically in learning about Anxiety and the tools we can use to manage it.

Whilst completing this project I was lucky enough to deliver some training for the support staff on managing anxiety in the classroom and how it all starts with regulation.

We looked at the theory and then the practical application of this in the school environment. The support staff team were very engaged and asked brilliant questions around how to manage LOTS of children at lunch time and managing anxiety in the classroom specifically.

The feedback was great and let’s be honest there is so much more value than anything online that ticks a box called ā€œCPDā€

If your school or organisation would like to embark on any training around anxiety and mental health, Neurodiversity support, Sleep Support or anything else. Get in touch and we can discuss your needs and outcomes.

LET’S GET REGULATED PEEPS 🧠

This week has been a hella busy one indeed. But that is also brilliant, so no complaints !

These pens I bought have been getting some good use this week. Anyone from the 90s may also remember them! These are blow pens and what a fantastic resource they are !

These are multi purpose. They provide amazing visual displays with bright ink being splatter over paper. They provide amazing sensory input through blowing through the pens to push the ink out and amazing regulatory purposes. As we know longer outward breaths are known to support vagus nerve and calming work.

Teaching these skills when children are nice and regulated; shows them how we can use them effectively when the thinking brain switches off and the behaviour brain wins the battle of the brains.

It’s safe to say I’ve had lots of cool cucumbers leaving the office this week and lots of AMAZING artwork made in the process.

Let’s teach out of the box techniques, breath work on its own is not going to be exciting to children or young people, add novelty and purpose and you have got yourself a winner !

Have a beautiful rest of your week humans

šŸ’€ MENTAL HEALTH DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SCARY šŸ’€

You perhaps might be thinking two things. One, Shawn what on earth are you doing dressed as a mummy and two it’s not even Halloween.

Both extremely valid questions ! However, this photo was recently sent to me by one of the teachers I used to work with in therapeutic education and I would love to say, dressing up and days like this were rare.. but I’d be lying šŸ˜‚

Working with specialist children with neurodiversity and ACEs was tough, but laid such a foundation for what I do now in supporting mental health. Being authentic, having fun, building safety and security and connections is what makes relationships work with children or not.

Navigating mental health can be scary, but everyone experiences mental health and unfortunately the media etc only focuses on ā€œNegativeā€ mental health but there is also a flip side and also a level of choice. I was discussing with the class of in training child and adolescent coaches yesterday why my process is regulation, rewire, rebuild and it’s because for me it makes logical sense.

If we can’t regulation, we cannot learn, we cannot create new habits and we cannot start to build the future we want. Foundations always first and then into the psychoeducation, goal setting, accountability and the list goes on.

If your child needs support with their mental health and wellbeing, I have some limited availability towards the end of Feb. Let’s not survive, let start to thrive.

Take it easy breazy wonderful humans 🧔

WHAT A VIEW, WHAT A JOURNEY🪾

Wha a busy little week already, choca block with lovely young people and families, writing courses and managing my own CPD on perhaps too many things šŸ˜‚ but it keep my mind active until I start my masters !

I took sometime today to run some life errands because work can be all consuming when you are self-employed and lead to stress and strain ! But on my drive this morning I just had to stop !

I’m very luck to have lived by the sea and the countryside…. For me it’s always been the sticks and greenery over the sea and pebbles. What a marvellous little creation we live in and how amazing that I live near views like this.

Life right now is peaceful but powerful, heavy but light, driven with purpose, determination to succeed and the gratitude of the experiences and life I live.

I have so many exciting projects on the way and new things that I feel are going to shape even more of my path. I am please to announce I have dipped my toes back into world of Safeguarding and I am now the Designated Safeguarding Lead for and I am so looking forward to support our amazing students in the world of safeguarding and support children and families.

Love what you do and you won’t worry a day in your life. Sometimes risks pay off and what’s life without a bit of risk?

Have a wonderful week peeps

IT ISN’T PERFECT, BUT IT MIGHT BE?

As some of you may know I listen to a lot a music ! It keeps me very grounded and has a huge impact on mode and productivity. Recently Spotify recommended the artist Olivia Dean to me…. Im hooked, catchy lyrics, beautiful songwriter and it seems a beautiful soul.

Lyrics always get me thinking and specifically whilst out on the dog walk today, this one.

ā€œIt might not be perfect, but it might beā€

And it’s just that. Dr Phil Stutz once said perfection is a snapshot meaning the mind has a fantasy of a perfect future moment, where everything is finally sorted, you feel whole, and life stops feeling hard. He frames it as a trap because it is static and it encourages perfectionism and constant future thinking, like ā€œI can’t start until the conditions are perfect.ā€ The problem, he says, is that real life always contains pain, uncertainty, and ongoing effort, so chasing the perfect snapshot keeps you stuck waiting rather than living and moving forward. ļæ¼

Life is rarely neat or linear and progress often shows up as willingness, curiosity, and trying again, even when it feels uncomfortable.

And this it is full circle - it isn’t perfect but it might be and that’s what matters.

Let me know your thoughts šŸ’š

🧊THE ICEBERG OF EMOTIONS 🧊

Yes, I know another worksheet exterminated here at the regulation den. Im going to get the name of the worksheet destroyer or eco warrior for saving SO MUCH PAPER with my products šŸ˜‚

Back on script ! Here we have a brilliant little product, one of my first produced and trickiest to get perfect in 3D Design. I use this all the time with the children I work with so it is tried and tested with real children, yes real ones, not made up for marketing purposes !

It is so important for children to understand what is going on for them. ā€œKnowledge is powerā€ is what my university lecturer once told me (Big up Jo D from Kingston Uni) and I truly believe it. Allow children to understand your outward feeling or action may not be what is actually going on for you and then we see a huge amount of šŸ’”moments, which is beautiful !

I also use this for many other things and concepts including goals, friendships; you name it, you can use it.

So, if you are done using boring worksheets and want something eye catching; practical and frankly pretty bloody cool for your office, classroom, home, grab yours now with the link in the bio.

Price is £10 +£3 shipping cost 🧔🧊

ā‰ļø NAUGHTY OR MISUNDERSTOOD ā‰ļø

A little fun video for you on this Sunday morning. One of my favourite moments last year was watching viral videos of ā€œTally the elfā€ at the Disney parade telling people they were naughty or nice !

However, I have had SO MANY clients recently discussing school, behavioural management and so fourth. Now don’t get me wrong, I worked in specialist schools for 16 years, I get it…. But the system as it stands isn’t working.

If you do something wrong it = consequence, kind of standard system. However, the current authoritarian style that schools are executing is utter madness. Lining up before going into school for uniform checks, being removed and put into isolation for talking in class…. Could you imagine this happening at work as an adult? Sorry Shawn, we are letting you go due to your shirt not being tucked in, we’ve called your mother, she is on route, so please wait in that booth on your own until she gets here. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Time plays a big factor and a cookie cutter approach, I get it, but, the consequence isn’t extinguishing the behaviour being displayed. So what is the causation of the behaviour? That is what needs to be looked at, not bam iso or detention. In all school you will see teachers who have it and unfortunately those who don’t. When you think back to your school days, who do you remember and why?

Schools need to be forward think, innovative, balanced, fun and get those bloody children outside. Prisoners have more outside time than children, that is real research ! If you need help in your school or setting, please get in touch for packages of training, support and consultancy 🧔

🧩 PIECING LIFE TOGETHER 🧩

In sessions this week I have absolutely loved using my new giant jigsaw pieces. Children love the novelty and visual aspect of them as well being able to use to to map out concepts and support.

I have used them in many different ways. In one photo we had a goal we are working towards and then all the elements needed to get towards that goal. Breaking it down and making it achievable for children is so important and sometimes goals and can feel impossible. However, the smallest piece of change is important as the brain notices and then wants more of it.

We then used the to map out the day and routine and use marbles akin to Coin/Spoon theory to see how much was being spent which was leading to dysregulation in the evening and how we were ending up in Debt. We then looked at how we can replenish marbles which will then support the evening without looking like isolation and hypostress responses.

It’s safe to say, I bloody love my job. If you want practical and real life help away from worksheets and your average talking therapy, dive into coaching with me and let’s create real change 🧔
