Lisburn Castlereagh Junior League 2016 Premier League Shield Final
Lisburn Youth 2016s 2-2 Banbridge (Lisburn Youth 3-2 winners on penalties)
What a match today. The boys battled brilliantly and very much held their own against an outstanding Banbridge team, with attacking weapons all over the pitch.
Fiercely competitive, but played in brilliant spirits today.
The match started with Lisburn Youth a bit nervy from an early corner, but Ben cleared off the line and Jonah managed to smother it.
We then grew into the tie and created a few opportunities without massively troubling the Banbridge keeper.
Jack and William stood strong at the back, supported by great running on the wings from Louis and Isaac. But Banbridge opened the scoring before half time with a superb solo goal down the right.
0-1 at half time.
The boys came out ready for the battle in the second half. Eventually a move down the left released Ben who hit the post with a right foot strike, leading to a goal mouth scramble and the equaliser.
5 minutes later Lisburn Youth took the lead, William getting to the ball first on the halfway line and scoring from long range.
Banbridge came back again, causing problems but great blocks from Jonah in goals, and Jack, Lorcan and William kept them out. But a dangerous in-swinging corner was brilliantly headed in to equalise.
There were more chances at both ends, with Georgie who battled and ran all day up front going close, and Xander hitting the woodwork with a superb effort. Two great saves at the other end from Jonah, one tipping a free kick on to bar and another Smeichel-like spread your body save kept Banbridge out.
2-2 at full-time in what was a pulsating final with skill, grit and drama throughout.
To penalties then. Ben, Georgie and Xander all dispatched excellently. Before Jonah made the vital save down low to his right to sn**ch the win.
Special mention to Kai and Cohen today, outstanding attitudes from the boys.
The Sam Baird Opticians Moment of the Match was definitely the joy on the boys' faces as they rushed to pile on after the penalty save.
What a day. Congratulations to both teams, the league and the ref, who were all superb.
