We often talk about kids who are later to begin speaking as “speech delayed” but did you know that usually, it’s not a speech delay- it’s actually a language delay. That’s because speech and language are two very different things!

This is very oversimplified, but here are some common speech delays and disorders: articulation, phonology, apraxia, & stuttering. Some common language based delays and disorders are: expressive language, receptive language, pragmatic language (this is how a lot of autistic kids qualify for speech support), and even some learning disorders like dyslexia are language based.

You can have great speech skills and have difficult with language (a child who can repeat everything and needs support generating their own comments) or have good language skills and have difficulty with speech (a person who communicates with sign language or AAC) - and a person can also have difficulty in both areas.

Your child usually develops phonological awareness around the age of 4 or 5 years old 🙌

It’s a really important skill for them to have when they start to learn the basics of reading at school 😊⁣

💥EASY💥 ways to teach priority words on a daily basis!

The key here is modeling the word in repetition 4-5x as you do what you’re saying (ex: saying “up” as their body is lifted up/ they’re experiencing “up”) and pausing and ✨waiting✨

The pause is sooo important in order to give your little one space to plan in their little mind what it is they want to say and actually say it! Little brains need time to motor plan & execute that plan.

If you’re loving these tips on priority words, stay tuned for next week because I’m teaming up with .signs to help teach you priority signs! Yes that’s right- sometimes imitating a sign can be easier than saying the word, as motor imitation typically precedes verbal imitation.

You won’t want to miss this!

📣 Autistic kids can be social!

When we are talking about Autism, many people assume that it means “anti-social” but in truth, it just means social in a different way!

Many autistic people communicate by saying what they mean, skipping small talk and getting to the deeper parts of condensations/connections (quicker and in a more “blunt” manner than neurotypical people tend to), and connect with others by relating personal experiences and sharing about their interests. It’s often very social in nature and often viewed as “overly social” to neurotypical people - and here are some examples of these differences:
