Do you really know how much your horse’s muscles do for their joints?

1️⃣ The hock and stifle are incredible joints, but they rely heavily on surrounding muscles to stay strong and stable.

2️⃣ When those muscles tighten, weaken, or fatigue, the joints have to compensate.

3️⃣ Over time, that can lead to uneven wear, inflammation, or reduced range of motion.

4️⃣ Keeping muscles healthy is the best joint protection you can give your horse.

Tap the follow button if you believe in working with your horse’s body, not against it 💜

We often think about the only way to protect our horse’s joints by adding supplements or changing the type of work they do…

But what if the real key to joint health starts in the muscles?

Muscles do more than move your horse, they stabilise, support, and absorb impact.

When muscles become tight or weak (something that happens easily in cold weather or with less movement), they can’t do their job properly.

That’s when joints like the hock and stifle start to take more strain.

So while winter is the season we all focus on staying warm and safe, it’s also the perfect time to:
✨ Reassess your horse’s body balance
✨ Release hidden tightness from the summer
✨ Build slow, correct strength to carry them into spring

When we focus on muscle health, we’re not just improving movement, we’re protecting the foundation of soundness itself.

If you’d like support understanding where your horse might be carrying tension or imbalance, DM me the word “SUPPORT” to chat about a tailored winter plan.

Colder weather. More stabling. Less turnout.

It’s no wonder so many horses start winter feeling stiffer than usual.

As temperatures drop, muscles become tighter and less elastic, which means they take longer to warm up and are more prone to strain.

That tightness doesn’t just stay in the muscles either; it starts to affect the joints they support.

So if your horse suddenly feels:
➡️ Less willing to step under behind
➡️ Stickier in transitions
➡️ Uneven behind, especially on turns

…it could be their body showing you where those muscles are struggling to cope.

Sometimes, it’s not the joint itself that’s the problem, it’s the muscle tension surrounding it.

Save this post as your reminder of how you can support your horse’s muscles and joints this winter.

We often focus on joints when we see stiffness or discomfort, but the truth is, muscles do most of the work in supporting those joints.

When muscles are tight, weak, or imbalanced, the joints have to take up the slack, especially high-motion ones like the hock and stifle.

Healthy, supple muscles = supported joints = a happier, sounder horse.

Double tap if you agree that prevention starts in the muscles 💜

Keep your eyes peeled for updates on her progress!

I created my ‘Body Mapping for Performance Workshop’, to give riders the tools to tackle these niggles before they become bigger problems.

In the workshop you’ll:
✨ Learn how to spot early signs of imbalance in your horse
✨ Connect what you’re feeling in the saddle with what’s happening in their body
✨ Take away practical exercises and techniques to support your horse long after the session ends

This isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about building long-term clarity, confidence, and connection in your partnership.

Imagine heading into winter and the new year knowing exactly what your horse’s body is telling you, and having the tools to support them with confidence.

If you’d like to start 2025 with a stronger, more connected partnership, DM me the word “WORKSHOP” to secure your space today

Have you noticed little niggles creeping into your rides lately?

You’ve tried everything but can’t seem to get to the bottom of the problem.

Maybe your horse feels heavier on one rein…
Maybe transitions are inconsistent…
Or maybe the softness you’re used to just isn’t there.

You’re doing all of the right things, everything should be falling into place, but it isn’t…

It’s so easy to push through and hope these things iron themselves out. But niggles rarely disappear on their own. Instead, the body finds ways to compensate, and those compensations can become ingrained movement patterns.

It’s frustrating for you, and it’s frustrating for your horse.

But the good news is, the sooner you address these issues, the easier they are to resolve.

You don’t have to carry them into the new year.

I have had the pleasure of working with this lovely mare following her back surgery.

She is an extravagant mover with a lot of energy but had to learn how to slow down and take more time in her movement so as not to fatigue weak muscles beyond their capabilities.

The first clip is of her working around the outside of the square and the latter is a few weeks later where she’s grown in strength and suppleness.

She is now enjoying a ridden career back with her owner.

If you’d like to have a chat about rehab or improving your horse’s strength, DM me the word “REHAB”

Bodywork isn't just for horses in recovery, they’re tools to keep every horse feeling balanced, comfortable, and ready for the season ahead.

When we focus on proactive support, you’ll notice:
✨ Your horse moves with more freedom, even as the ground softens
✨ They carry themselves with more balance and rhythm
✨ Rides feel more connected, with fewer sticky transitions or resistant moments

Think of it like conditioning your horse’s musculoskeletal system before winter really tests it. By spotting and releasing compensations now, you make sure they’re not carrying hidden tightness into the months ahead.

If you’d like your horse to go into winter feeling their best, not already compensating for summer, DM me the word “RESET” and I’ll share how I can help your horse.

When we think of tension, we often picture obvious lameness or big behavioural changes. But the truth is, most horses start by showing us really subtle signs that something isn’t quite right.

And after a long summer on hard ground, your horse might be carrying more of those niggles than you realise.

You’re not being over-picky for noticing. You’re listening. And the sooner we address these things, the easier it is to help your horse feel free, soft, and balanced again.

DM me the word “TENSION” to have a chat about how I can help you!

Do you know how much the ground can affect your horse’s WHOLE body?!

So many horses head into winter already carrying tightness or compensations from the summer.

Maybe they’ve picked up tension in the shoulders from hard ground.
Maybe their stride feels shorter or uneven.
Maybe you’ve noticed resistance in transitions or softness that seems harder to find.

The problem is, once the ground softens and conditions change, those little weaknesses often get magnified.

➡️ A horse who was already a bit uneven may trip more on soft or muddy ground.

➡️ A horse carrying tightness may struggle more with balance as conditions get heavier.

➡️ And the effort of adapting can show up in their behaviour, tension, resistance, or just not feeling quite ‘themselves’ under saddle.

It’s not about them being naughty. It’s about their body showing you where they’re struggling.

Heading into winter with these niggles unaddressed often means more frustration, less confidence, and a higher chance of injury.

Prevention really is better than cure!
