Something strange happens after 40…

You eat the same foods
exercise the same way
but your body responds differently.

I swear I woke up one morning and my body shape had changed!

It doesn't mean we've suddenly become lazy and it's definitely not a cue to give up.

It’s biology.

Oestrogen was quietly managing:

• stress hormones

Impulsive permission feels good for five minutes.
Intentional permission feels good tomorrow.

We CAN make choices that make us feel good in the moment AND that our future self would be proud of. The kind of choices that help us keep moving towards health, instead of spiralling into self hatred.

The question isn’t: Do I want this now? Of course, part of you (usually the emotional part) genuinely does.

The question is: Will tomorrow’s me back this decision?

“Sod it" energy is just dysregulation with a story attached. We honestly believe that we are totally justified in eating crap or drinking alcohol in that moment.

When we say ‘I can’t be arsed,’ what we often mean is ‘I’m overwhelmed.’

My life used to be based on "What do I fancy?" rather than "What do I need ?" or "What will my future self thank me for?"

We might be able to get away with that when we're young, and have little stress, but everything changes over time and we cannot sustain this over time.

Tea is socially acceptable. It's the British solution to pretty much everything.

Biscuits and cake make the pause legitimate.

A seemingly valid excuse to actually sit down and have a minute, rather than running around with a take-out cuppa or a half slurped brew that's already been microwaved twice, in between the 5 million items on your to do list.

If what you really need is rest, take rest.
Don’t disguise it as sugar.

If what you need is comfort, give yourself comfort.
Don’t borrow it from ultra-processed food.

The more we try NOT to have something…
the louder it gets, right?

“I don’t want a biscuit.”
“I don’t even like biscuits.”
“Biscuit.”
“Biscuit.”
“BISCUIT.”

And then…

You eat one.
Then another.
Then six.

And suddenly it’s:

“You’ve ruined it.”
“There’s no point now.”
“You might as well eat the lot.”

I’ve been there. Many times.

But here’s what changed everything for me:

When my blood sugar is stable…
When my stress levels are lower…
When I’ve eaten enough protein and fibre…
When I’m not running on fumes…

I don’t even think about the biscuit.
