Protein is crucial for your hormones and when we pair them with a carb, we provide our body with the nutrients needed to thrive.
Let’s talk about why protein is crucial for hormone health:
1. Liver Function:
Protein provides amino acids that power our liver function.
2. Digestive Capacity:
Amino acids are used to make enzymes that help us breakdown our food. Our pancreas releases digestive enzymes while we are eating, which is key to digest our food.
3. Muscle Growth & Retention:
We need protein to put on muscle and maintain it. We also need carbohydrates, but we need complete protein sources in order to build up muscle tissue. More muscle means a healthy metabolism, which supports proper thyroid function.
4. Thyroid Conversion:
We need adequate levels of amino acids to convert thyroid hormone in the liver. Low protein can lead to poor thyroid hormone conversion, and we need adequate thyroid hormone to ovulate and produce estrogen. This can lead to excess estrogen, PMS, mood swings, acne, and painful or heavy periods.
5. Blood Sugar Balance:
Pairing a protein with a carbohydrate is key to support our blood sugar. This helps the body breakdown the carbs at a slower speed rather than rushing them into the bloodstream and causing insulin to release quickly.
