Domestic abuse is a complex issue, which can take many forms including psychological, financial, sexual, emotional and physical.

This past year has been challenging for everyone, but for victims of domestic abuse who are suffering from continued cruelty and violence it will have felt and will continue to feel intolerable. Lockdown has meant that it’s easier for abusers to control and abuse their victims, who are probably feeling more isolated and alone than they would under normal circumstances.

Children are often the silent victims of domestic abuse, with no schools open they are also locked into situations with few opportunities to gain support.

If you are suffering from domestic abuse then Merseyside Police, along with partner agencies, are still here to offer help and support. You are not alone. If home is not a safe place for you then you do not have to stay there and you can and should leave to seek help. Charities are still working, helplines are live and refuges are available.

If you are in immediate danger, you should always call 999. If you ring 999 and are not in a safe position to speak to us then cough, or tap the phone and press 55, when prompted. This will alert the operator that you need assistance and we will provide support.

Alternatively, there is a new scheme called ‘Ask for Ani’ which offers an opportunity to reach out for help at pharmacies, including Boots, without making your situation obvious to other members of the public, or alerting your abuser. If you ‘Ask for Ani’ at pharmacy counters then you will be taken by a staff member to a private space where you can be put in touch with the police, support services and helplines.

Whether you are currently experiencing abuse, or have suffered abuse in the past, support is available. Domestic Abuse specialist services in your local area remain open and can offer you expert support and advice. They will not tell you what to do but will provide options and choices to help you live safely and recover from abuse.

Please note that the practice is shut on Friday 25th December, Monday 28th December and Friday 1st January.

During bank holidays, when GP practices will be closed, people should contact NHS 111 in the first instance – unless it is a 999 emergency.

NHS 111 will direct people to the most appropriate local health service, which could include an out of hours GP, a local Walk-in Centre, a pharmacy, or hospital Accident & Emergency (A&E) department.

If patients are assessed as needing A&E, they will be given a booked time slot to reduce waiting times and ensure that they are safely socially-distanced from other patients.

However, people should still dial 999 in a medical emergency, such as a suspected stroke or heart attack.

For treatment of minor illness and injuries patients can also still access a local Walk In Centre (open 8am-8pm daily) by calling 0300 100 1004 to pre-book an appointment.

You can also visit your local pharmacist for advice or treatment for a wide range of minor winter illnesses and ailments too. Many now offer longer opening hours – including over evening and weekends.

The NHS is currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to people most at risk from Coronavirus.

The order in which people will be offered the vaccine is based on advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

The NHS will let you know when it's your turn to have the vaccine. It's important not to contact the NHS for a vaccination before then.

You can read more about the COVID-19 vaccine on the nhs.uk website.

Are you a new student who has just moved to Liverpool?

It has never been more important for all students to be registered with a GP as soon as possible.

GP practices provide a range of services including medical advice and treatment for common illnesses, vaccinations and access to prescriptions. They can also help with ongoing long-term conditions as well as refer you to hospital and other specialist services for treatment if necessary.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are operating differently to help keep our patients safe. Please do not visit our practice in person unless you have been told it is okay to do so. If you need medical help or advice, we have a range of ways in enabling you to receive help including telephone and online consultations, and where appropriate, face to face consultations.

If you or a family member need urgent advice or medical care over the bank holiday weekend, it’s important that you know where to go.

Members of the public are being urged to make NHS 111 their first point of call for help and advice whilst your GP surgery is closed for the bank holiday on Monday 31st August.

You can visit www.111.nhs.uk, or call NHS 111 for immediate health advice and support 24 hours a day, as well as to access to local GPs out of hours, or for further assistance if you aren’t sure where to go.

In addition, local NHS Walk-in Centres across Liverpool will continue to operate daily between 8am–8pm, including over the bank holiday weekend, but you will need to call them on 0300 100 1004 to pre-arrange an appointment first.

Liverpool’s NHS walk in centres will have an advanced paediatric or general paediatric nurse on duty at each site. This clinical enhancement means regardless of which NHS walk in centre parents and carers are directed to, children will also be seen by a specialist children’s nurse.

Some local pharmacies will also continue to be open over the bank holiday and can offer advice and treatments to manage any minor illnesses or ailments yourself at home. Please check our website to view the list of local pharmacies for their exact opening times, but don’t forget that many simple home remedies such as anti-histamines and painkillers are sold in supermarkets too.

You should only call 999 or go to an accident & emergency department when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk. This is especially important if you think someone is having a heart attack or stroke – every second counts with these conditions, so act fast!

Anyone with coronavirus symptoms – a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or loss of taste – should continue to use the dedicated NHS 111 coronavirus service online at: www.111.nhs.uk/COVID-19 and order a test.
