Why would people ever want to take a mood-altering substance? Clearly, the answer must be in order to speed up the the natural process of changing feelings through healthy behaviour. In short, it is cheating: giving the person an unearned psychological lift.
Yet the three most commonly used mood-altering substances - alcohol, sugar and ni****ne - are killers of vast numbers of people every day.
At our peril, we forget that the human brain is a physical substance. Its magical function depends upon its physical integrity. If we distort its biochemical processes, we poison its capacity to think and perceive.
Mood-altering substances also commonly have significant physical effects, damaging many body organs including the brain substance itself.
Inevitably, addicts - by using more of a mood-altering substance - get more damage from it. They fill the physical and mental hospital beds. Yet doctors tend to prefer to treat the consequences of use of mood-altering substances rather than attempt to influence underlying behaviour, other than by telling people to cut down or stop.
If addicts could have heard, and acted upon, that simplistic advice, they would have done so.
Sensible advice works for sensible people, not for addicts. They need professional understanding of their specific clinical condition, just as much as do those individuals who suffer from cancer, diabetes and heart disease. And very often these are the same patients, becoming interesting to doctors only when suffering the consequences of their compulsions.
And behind all addicts, who are killing themselves with substances, are determined compulsive helpers, keeping everything going in the same progressively fatal direction.

Society has a very particular idea of what an addict should look like, homeless and destitute is further reinforced through the media. Anyone no matter their age, gender or background can find themselves trapped in addiction.

No one factor can predict if a person will become addicted to drugs or alcohol. A combination of factors influences risk for addiction. The more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance of addiction.

We Do Recover UK - Drug and alcohol detox and rehab in Liverpool.

We are a 30 bed residential treatment centre that facilitates detox, rehabilitation and aftercare. Our regulatory body is CQC. We can offer a choice of accommodation which has been refurbished to a high standard to allow for a client’s individual needs.

All rooms have a sink and there are 9 shared bathrooms/shower rooms. Every bedroom is furnished with a chest of drawers and a bedside table.

There are 25 large single bedrooms and 3 shared rooms, with 2 rooms located on the ground floor. All the single rooms have double beds and the shared rooms have single beds.

Our facility includes a 1-2-1 room, group rooms, lounge, 2 dining rooms (where healthy meals are cooked from scratch by our amazing chefs) and a lovely garden with smoking area. Clients can help themselves to tea, coffee and water at our drinks station throughout the day.

For our client’s entertainment we provide sky television in the lounge which they can watch in the evenings or at the weekend. We also on occasion have a quiz and there are board games available.

There is WIFI throughout the building. We allow clients to bring their mobile phones, however there are some boundaries around times of use.

Our team of professional staff consist of the following. Fenella – Admissions Carl – Registered manager Chris – Therapeutic Lead Frank, Ifor and Karen – Therapists Sam, Billy, Carl, Will, Michaela, Moyo, Ellis, Stephen, Hazel, Nicola, – Support workers Nick – Chef

We also have our team of medical professionals who assess clients on their day of arrival.

Our program is abstinence based. We offer a very structured program which typically runs from 08.00am – 21.30pm. There are 5 – 6 groups per day.

We advocate the 12-step model, however we can also offer SMART recovery workshops as an alternative if required. Our program is designed to help achieve recovery through the means of traditional models of addiction and recovery, whilst being firmly rooted in evidence-based practice.

Other groups which we offer are as follows:

Meditation, mindfulness, Gong therapy, relapse prevention, CBT therapy, family intervention, person centred counselling, 12 step, fellowship meetings such as AA,NA, GA, positive thinking, anxiety management, written assignments, problem solving, presentations, sleep hygiene, managing stress, acceptance groups, creating a recovery plan, interpersonal group therapy, managing cravings/urges, roles, life story, trauma and many more.

Clients also have access to a local gym which has a swimming pool (this may not be available at present due to COVID 19).
