Rare quiet day in clinic for me today.... so seized the opportunity to read this long awaited research paper evaluating the affect of the ScarWork techniques on a range of cancer survivors. So marvellous to have some, up-to- date evidence based research to justify to the sceptics how marvellous this technique can be & the relief it can bring to patients following a wide variety of surgeries. Well done & the Supportive Oncology Research team at East & North Hertfordshire NHS trust.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) UK has launched a new comprehensive guide that includes the latest scientific evidence for anyone who wants to know the facts about keeping healthy after cancer. The guide is for those who have finished their cancer treatment to keep healthy and help reduce the chance of cancer recurring.
Even if you've been given the all-clear, it can be a daunting time and is often made worse by the mixed messages about what diet and lifestyle advice people should be following. It’s full of practical advice on:
• ways to eat more healthily
• how to manage weight loss and gain
• getting more activity into the day
• and how to make healthy changes stick.
It also addresses some of the common myths that people have around diet and cancer.
You can download the new guide here: wcrf-uk.org/HLAC

Posted • The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of successful treatment. So it’s important to check your breasts regularly and see your GP if you notice a change.

Checking your breasts only takes a few minutes, there’s no special technique and you don’t need training. It's as simple as TLC: Touch Look Check. Here's a quick guide on what you should be looking out for when checking your breasts.

‘ Today is the official launch of PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehab Foundation Charity! 🙌
It’s main aim to make living well after a cancer diagnosis accessible to all.
As unfortunately just as it was prior to the pandemic at least 1 in 3 people continue to be diagnosed with cancer, and successfully completing treatment is often just their first step in an arduous journey back to health.
My aim a a PINC trained therapist is not just to treat patients that have been affected by cancer when they come through our doors but to continually raise awareness of what a difference cancer rehabilitation can make; whether that be achieving personal goals such as; picking up a Grandchild again with confidence to returning to a much loved hobby or washing your hair independently again to getting back into training for that half marathon you’d started before diagnosis... these are all things that cancer rehabilitation therapists can help with.

Can’t believe it’s been just over a year since we did this - such great fun for such a great cause!
Now time to plan the next challenge... This time in support of Pinc and Steel, who have recently official become a registered charity in the UK and Ireland, thanks to Lou & the teams hard work.

“ The Foundation will be a genuine grassroots effort to help our network of certified Physiotherapists and OTs, collaborate and gain more support in their local communities.”

The aim of the charity is to provide an umbrella to help you:
* Break down barriers to referrals
* Break down barriers to help people that can’t afford private cancer rehab services
* Provide a platform for your community to get behind you to support the work you do for people affected by cancer
* Raise awareness of the importance of cancer rehab
* Provide a funding stream for cancer rehab classes at your work place

Cancer rehabilitation is not focused on the disease it is focused on people and helping them get back to living.

Cancer rehabilitation is not just about exercise. The focus is on listening to people’s concerns and helping them achieve their goals and whatever is important to them.

Whether it is getting back to work or being able to lift their arm over their head without pain; or
being able to walk more than 5 minutes without feeling completely fatigued; or being able to have the strength to lift their children; or to have the stamina to be able to cope with an overseas trip.

The recovery of cancer is different for each individual. Some people may look like they have sailed through treatment and look completely fine on the outside ….however, the effects of the treatment are very hidden from the outside world and the impact is huge on their life.

If someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer, make sure they see a certified cancer rehab therapist.

•Some women may have been putting off attending their GP to have an important breast symptom investigated during the pandemic, and authorities are urging anyone with a breast symptom to seek immediate medical advice.
•Social distancing measures and the stay home message seem to have filtered through to most and the clear message is stay at home unless you need to leave for exercise, essential work, picking up crucial supplies or attending important appointments.
•Putting off seeing your doctor for a breast lump you discover is not ideal, and the current pandemic should not stop us from getting things checked out by our doctor. •There is a misconception that GP practices are not currently seeing patients, but that is primarly because patients aren’t attending.
•Breast imaging services (other than Breastscreen) have continued as normal throughout the COVID crisis, and if you have a breast symptom, you should see your GP who can order imaging +/- needle biopsy.
•COVID-19 is a serious issue right now but conditions like breast cancer have not simply disappeared – they’re all still problems that we need to keep preventing and managing.
