St Joseph's Hospice St. Joseph's Hospice is the oldest and largest hospice on Merseyside. The hospice in Thornton, opened in 1974.
(1)

St Joseph's Hospice (or Jospice) was founded in 1962 by Father Francis O’Leary, while working as a young priest in Pakistan. It is the oldest and largest hospice on Merseyside and has been providing palliative and end of life care for adult patients from across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and West Lancashire for more than 40 years. We are a registered charity and our specialist nursing teams care for over 200 people with a wide range of conditions every year. We also care for and support our patients’ families and carers. We have 29 patient rooms and are fortunate to be located in a beautiful setting within a conservation area and 12 acres of natural woodland. We do not charge for our care and rely on our local communities to continue to support the hospice. Around two-thirds of our funding comes from charitable giving, including donations, fundraising and legacies.

As a Registered Nurse, no two shifts are ever the same. Whilst on duty, you will lead the activities of a unit of up to 11 patient beds and be responsible for delivering a high standard of patient care, with a team of Healthcare Assistants.

On days, each unit is staffed by a Registered Nurse and 2-3 Healthcare Assistants. This works out as approximately 1:3 staff to patient ratio, giving our staff the opportunity to develop a real nurse/patient rapport and provide holistic care.

Staff are supported and led by the Clinical Management Team.

We ask staff who work nights only to rotate onto a week of day shifts every few months, as part of their personal development.

You can submit the application form via email to recruitment@stjhospice.org.uk or post it to the HR Department, St Joseph's Hospice, Ince Road, Thornton, Merseyside, L23 4UE. If you have any queries, please call the HR department on 0151 932 2055.

💃 Meet Jane!

Jane is a Commissioning Manager for the NHS who lives in Crosby with her partner Paul and their two grown-up sons, Jack and Anthony.

Jane loves a bit of sparkle and has always dreamed of being on Strictly Come Dancing — so she’s making that dream come true by stepping onto the Strictly St Joseph’s 2026 dancefloor at the Titanic Hotel, Liverpool, this March. ✨

With no previous dance experience, she’s ready to take on the challenge, raise vital funds for local hospice care, and maybe even discover a new fitness passion along the way.

Jane’s favourite Strictly pro is Aljaž, and she’s hoping for a Len or Anton-style judge on the night.
“Music-wise, I’m hoping for something up-tempo that will get the audience going. I love Prince’s music, so that would be amazing!”

Visit our website to learn more about Jane and find out how you can support this year’s dancers:
