St Joseph's Hospice (or Jospice) was founded in 1962 by Father Francis O’Leary, while working as a young priest in Pakistan. It is the oldest and largest hospice on Merseyside and has been providing palliative and end of life care for adult patients from across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and West Lancashire for more than 40 years. We are a registered charity and our specialist nursing teams care for over 200 people with a wide range of conditions every year. We also care for and support our patients’ families and carers. We have 29 patient rooms and are fortunate to be located in a beautiful setting within a conservation area and 12 acres of natural woodland. We do not charge for our care and rely on our local communities to continue to support the hospice. Around two-thirds of our funding comes from charitable giving, including donations, fundraising and legacies.

✨ Light up a Life 2025 ✨

Last night, we came together for our annual Light up a Life ceremony — a heartfelt moment where friends and families joined us to celebrate and remember those we hold close in our hearts. It was a time to reflect, rejoice, and honour the memories of loved ones who have passed.

We were delighted to be joined by the wonderful choir from St. Mary’s College Preparatory School, whose beautiful performance added warmth and meaning to an already poignant evening.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped us mark the start of the festive season with love, remembrance, and community. 💛✨

As a Registered Nurse, no two shifts are ever the same. Whilst on duty, you will lead the activities of a unit of up to 11 patient beds and be responsible for delivering high standard of patient care, with a team of Healthcare Assistants.

On days, each unit is staffed by a Registered Nurse and 2-3 Healthcare Assistants. This works out as approximate 1:3 staff to patient ratio giving our staff the opportunity to develop a real nurse/patient rapport and provide holistic care.

Staff are supported and led by the Clinical Management Team.

You can submit application form via email to recruitment@stjhospice.org.uk or post it to HR Department, St Joseph's Hospice, Ince Road, Thornton, Merseyside, L23 4UE. If you have any queries, please call the HR department on 0151 932 2055.

This Grief Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the support available to families coping with loss.

In this video, Jackie Walsh, our Family Support Worker, shares how she helps families make sense of their emotions, find comfort, and move forward at their own pace.

Together, we can build a community where grief is understood and supported. 💜

🌳 A new chapter begins.
On Friday we proudly planted our Sycamore Gap sapling as part of the Tree of Hope campaign. Being chosen as one of only 49 organisations to receive a sapling is an incredible honour—and a reminder of the strength, symbolism, and shared history this tree represents.

We’re deeply grateful to play a small part in carrying its legacy forward. 💚
Here’s to watching it grow, flourish, and inspire generations to come.
