St Joseph's Hospice (or Jospice) was founded in 1962 by Father Francis O’Leary, while working as a young priest in Pakistan. It is the oldest and largest hospice on Merseyside and has been providing palliative and end of life care for adult patients from across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and West Lancashire for more than 40 years. We are a registered charity and our specialist nursing teams care for over 200 people with a wide range of conditions every year. We also care for and support our patients’ families and carers. We have 29 patient rooms and are fortunate to be located in a beautiful setting within a conservation area and 12 acres of natural woodland. We do not charge for our care and rely on our local communities to continue to support the hospice. Around two-thirds of our funding comes from charitable giving, including donations, fundraising and legacies.

💜 A wonderful act of kindness 💜

Pupils from Form 9AR at Holy Family High School brought a thoughtful hamper of treats for our staff, bringing plenty of smiles along with it.

After being given £10 by their Headmaster and challenged to do something kind, the pupils chose to share their generosity with our Hospice community.

They also brought along a guitar and sang for our patients, filling the Hospice with music, warmth and joy.

Thank you, Form 9AR, for your kindness and compassion – it truly meant so much to everyone. 🎶💜

If you have any handmade HUG DOLLS or HUG HEARTS you would be happy to donate, St Joseph’s Hospice Thornton would be incredibly grateful.

These special items bring comfort to patients and families, and we are currently running low on supplies.

👉 To donate, please contact Jackie Walsh, Family Support Worker, on 0151 932 6032 and leave your contact details.

Any donations would be hugely appreciated – thank you for helping us share comfort and care when it’s needed most. 💜

Form 8D at Holy Family High School were given £10 by the Headteacher with the challenge of doing something kind.

They chose to buy flowers and a heart-shaped chocolate, which they brought to the hospice to brighten the patients’ day. It was especially lovely to see young people wanting to connect with the hospice and bring a little joy to both patients and staff.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to Form 8D at Holy Family High School. What a lovely thought.

We are celebrating the outstanding success of its 2025 Christmas Tree Collection, which surpassed all expectations, collecting and recycling an incredible 835 real Christmas trees and raising £15,000 in much-needed funds to support ongoing hospice care.

We would like to extend our thanks to WSP and Balfour Beatty, alongside the teams at Sutcliffe, NLBF, and Tilly Hire. Together, they drove vans, collected trees, and worked tirelessly throughout the collection period to ensure the success of the Christmas Tree recycling scheme.

We plan to run the collection again next year. To register your interest in volunteering or signing up for your tree collection, please visit
