We are an NHS GP practice serving over 6,000 patients in Wavertree and Childwall, delivering first-class, patient-centred care from our historic Penny Lane premises. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, how you contact us will be different at the moment. This is to limit face-to-face contact whenever possible and help stop the spread of coronavirus. We are open and if you need to see your GP, please visit our website www.pennylanesurgery.nhs.uk to complete an e-consultation. If your query is urgent or you are unable to complete an e-consultation, please ring us on 0151 733 2800. Please be aware that you may be asked to call us back after 1pm if our morning appointments have been booked. Face-to-face appointments are available to all patients, but you may be asked to discuss your conditions over the phone or online first to assess what would be most appropriate for you. Please do not come to the surgery unless you have an appointment. If you are asked to come into the surgery for a face-to-face appointment, please remember to wear a face covering. Measures are in place to keep you safe from infection during your visit to the surgery. 🤧 Got a cold? Here’s what you can do at home!

Did you know most colds can be treated without seeing a GP? Here are some simple tips to help you feel better faster:

✅ Do:
- Get plenty of rest
- Drink lots of fluids (water is best!)
- Eat healthy food (kids may lose their appetite for a few days)
- Gargle salt water for a sore throat (not for children)
- Try a hot lemon & honey drink
- Breathe in steam to ease a blocked nose (sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running)

❌ Don’t:
- Let children breathe steam from a bowl of hot water (risk of burns)
- Give aspirin to children under 16
- Smoke – it makes symptoms worse

If you have a high temperature or feel too unwell for normal activities, stay home and avoid contact until you feel better.

You can buy cough and cold medicines from pharmacies or supermarkets.
A pharmacist can advise you on the best medicine, such as:
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches & fever
- Decongestant sprays or tablets (not for under 6s)
- Vapour rubs for babies & small children

⚠️ Avoid mixing medicines containing paracetamol or ibuprofen. Some cough & cold medicines aren’t suitable for babies, children, or pregnant women.

There’s little evidence that supplements like vitamin C, echinacea, or garlic prevent colds or speed recovery.

Don't take antibiotics for colds and flu - they won't help because these illnesses are caused by viruses, not bacteria. If in doubt, go to your local pharmacy for advice.

The overuse of antibiotics in recent years means they're becoming less effective and has led to the emergence of "superbugs".

Both the NHS and health organisations across the world are trying to reduce the use of antibiotics, especially for health problems that are not serious.

For example, antibiotics are no longer routinely used to treat:
- chest infections
- ear infections in children
- sore throats

🔥 It’s Bonfire Night tomorrow! Do you know how to treat a burn? 🔥

Accidents can happen, so it’s important to know what to do if someone gets burned or scalded. Acting quickly and correctly can help limit skin damage.

👉 First Aid for Burns:

Stop the burning process — remove the person from danger, douse flames with water, or smother with a blanket (but don’t put yourself at risk!).

Remove any clothing or jewellery near the burnt area of skin, including babies' nappies. But do not try to remove anything that's stuck to the burnt skin, as this could cause more damage.

Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible.
❌ Don’t use ice, creams, butter, or greasy substances.

Keep yourself or the person warm. Use a blanket or layers of clothing, but avoid putting them on the injured area. Keeping warm will prevent hypothermia, where a person's body temperature drops below 35C (95F). This is a risk if you're cooling a large burnt area, particularly in young children and elderly people.

Cover the burn with cling film (lay it over gently, don’t wrap it). For hand burns, a clean plastic bag works well.

Treat pain with paracetamol or ibuprofen (check the instructions carefully — no aspirin for children under 16).

Raise the area if possible to reduce swelling.

🚑 Go to A&E if the burn is:

Larger than the person’s hand

Deep, white, or charred

On the face, neck, hands, feet, joints, or ge****ls

Caused by chemicals or electricity

Showing signs of shock (clammy skin, sweating, dizziness, rapid breathing)

Also seek medical help if the person is under 10, has a medical condition, such as heart, lung or liver disease, or diabetes has a weakened immune system (the body's defence system) – for example, because of HIV or AIDS, or because they're having chemotherapy for cancer.

Stay safe and enjoy Bonfire Night responsibly! 🎆✨
