Thursday evenings mean only one thing… Thursday Club at Mencap Liverpool and Sefton!

Yesterdays session was absolutely action-packed!

We were thrilled to welcome our new member Paul, who wasted no time showing off his amazing pool skills  in our Games Room – what a player!

We also had the fabulous Annalise from Shine Brightly join us, bringing her banging playlist full of our favourite tunes  – especially Love Train, which got everyone up dancing and singing along!

Meanwhile, our members enjoyed boccia in the Sun Room , mindful colouring in the Quiet Room , and fun and laughter around every corner. And weaving their way through it all were our incredible volunteers – chatting, dancing, supporting, and helping make every Thursday night one to remember.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, old and new, for giving up your time each week to make Thursday Club so special. You truly make it happen!

Last week at Thursday Club, things got a little bit spooky as we celebrated Halloween in style — and our members did not disappoint! 🕸️🧛‍♀️

Everyone came dressed in their best costumes and really got into the spirit of the evening. We were also treated to a fantastic performance from Lucy at Cherry Tree Entertainment, who sang some of our favourite Halloween hits — and got everyone up singing and dancing! 🎤

Our wonderful volunteers joined in the fun too, helping make it a night full of laughter, music, and friendship.

Thursday Club has been running from Mencap Community Cottage for 62 years, and its rich history of friendship, inclusion, and fun continues to shine through every week.

After a short break, our new Sing-a-Long Group at The Croissant was back this week!

Mencap Liverpool and Sefton members Sue, Amber, Tony, and Kevin joined in for another fantastic evening of music, laughter, and fun, led by the amazing Gail Faragher.

Gail is a fantastic singer and really inspired everyone with her energy and encouragement. We revisited some favourites from our first session — Thulma Mama and Three Little Birds by Bob Marley — and learned some new tunes too, including Dirty Old Town and The Irish Rover - which is actually a really funny song!

If you love singing or you’re just looking for a relaxed, friendly evening with great company, this could be the group for you! Come along and get involved — everyone’s welcome

On Friday, we recorded our latest “Reach Out” radio show on LCR 106.7fm — and it was another brilliant episode!

This time, Kevin took the lead as interviewer and did a fantastic job speaking with Linda Griffiths, Lead Nurse for the North West, North Wales and Isle of Man Congenital Heart Disease Network, and Jacqui Bligh, a parent carer.

Together, they talked about the Congenital Heart Disease Network — what congenital heart defects are, how people with a learning disability can be better supported within health services, the important work being done through their Learning Disability Forum and lots more.

Kevin asked some really thoughtful and insightful questions — exploring how we can make healthcare more inclusive and how we can help ensure that people with a learning disability receive the understanding, respect and care they deserve.

Our radio shows have been such an important platform for:

- Highlighting the challenges people with a learning disability face

- Working with other organisations to build relationships and promote the positive changes we can make

- Promoting awareness of learning disability and the work of Mencap Liverpool & Sefton

- Building our members’ confidence and giving people a stronger voice

We’re so proud of Kevin and everyone involved in the show — using radio to raise awareness, start conversations, and make sure the voices of people with a learning disability are heard loud and clear. Thank you to Steve and the team .7fm for your continued help and support. This episode will be airing soon!

It has been a busy and brilliant time for our Mencap Liverpool and Sefton Outreach Champions last week— Friday's Outreach Champions meeting was a great opportunity to come together, share updates, and celebrate everyone’s achievements!

Last week had been all about Racheal, Lewis and Kyle, who have each been out delivering the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (Tier 2) to a local social care provider alongside Tracey Richards from National Mencap.

Each of them has done an amazing job sharing their lived experiences as Experts by Experience — helping staff understand the importance of listening, speaking up, and making small changes that can make a big difference.

The training sessions were held at the beautiful Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot, and everyone who attended showed such passion, care and commitment to improving health outcomes for people with a learning disability.

It was also lovely to reflect on what’s been happening socially — everyone had a fantastic time at our Halloween Party in Southport earlier in the week!

Now, our focus turns to preparing for the Mencap Liverpool and Sefton AGM. The group are going to be working on their presentation and celebrate all the incredible things we’ve achieved this year.

Today was the third day of delivering the one-day Tirr 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training to a local care provider — once again hosted in the beautiful Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot.

Our Expert by Experience today was Kyle Wallace from Mencap Liverpool & Sefton, who did a fantastic job co-delivering the session alongside Tracey Richards, Lead Trainer from National Mencap.

This was Kyle’s second time delivering the training, and he was absolutely brilliant — calm and confident.

Today was a first for our Outreach Manager, Jo Bruce, she qualified as an Oliver McGowan Lead Trainer and received her Oliver McGowan Trainer Number this week so it is offical!

Jo delivered part of the session alongside Kyle, including sections on the LeDeR Report and the statistics that remind us all why this training is so vital.

In 2022, 3,648 people with a learning disability were reported to LeDeR as having died. Of every ten people with a learning disability who died, six were men and four were women. Even more starkly, of every ten people with a learning disability, only 4 were still alive at the age of 65 or 40%— compared to 90% in the general population.

These figures are a powerful reminder of why the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training matters so much. It gives care staff the knowledge and confidence to speak up if they notice something doesn’t seem right, and to advocate for the people they support. The relationships they have with the people they care for are vital and can truly save lives.

It’s always a pleasure delivering this training with this particular care provider. Their passion, care, and respect for the people they support really shines through.

Kyle did an amazing job today — and everyone left feeling inspired that even small changes can make a big difference.

Today, we welcomed the second group of staff from a local social care organisation to complete their one-day Oliver McGowan Mandatory Tier 2 Training, once again held in the beautiful Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot.

The morning session on Learning Disabilities was co-delivered by Lewis Scott, our Expert by Experience from Mencap Liverpool & Sefton, alongside Tracey Richards, Lead Trainer from National Mencap.

This was Lewis’s first time delivering the training — and he absolutely smashed it!

It was clear he’d spent lots of time practising and preparing. His delivery was confident, his volume and pace were spot on, and the session flowed really naturally. Lewis did a fantastic job sharing his lived experience and helping participants understand the impact of good – and poor – health and care for people with a learning disability.

Tracey brought her usual warmth, skill and encouragement, guiding the group through the training with expertise and energy. Together, they made a brilliant team and created an engaging and open learning space which allowed lots of discussion and partipation from people attending.

Training like this is so important. Did you know that people with a learning disability and autism can die up to 28 years earlier than the general population — with an average age at death of just 55 years old compared to 82.7 years old?

That’s why this training matters. It gives social care staff the confidence to speak up, and to advocate for the people they support. The relationships and understanding that support staff have are vital — and can save lives.

Lewis did an amazing job today, and everyone left the training reminded that even small changes can make a big difference.

🌟 A huge congratulations to Mencap Liverpool & Sefton Member, Racheal Roy! 🌟

Today, Racheal co-delivered her first Oliver McGowan Mandatory Tier 2 Training as a qualified Expert by Experience alongside Tracey Richards, Lead Trainer from National Mencap.

This was Racheal’s very first time delivering the training — and although she felt nervous, she did a superb job sharing her lived experiences of health.

Racheal, as the Expert by Experience with a learning disability, leads the morning session with Tracey. Today’s training was delivered to a social care provider, and the group were so engaged — full of passion for supporting and advocating for the people they care for.

The session took place at the beautiful Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot, a lovely and inspiring location for such an important topic.

This training really matters. Every day, three people with a learning disability die an avoidable death. That’s three too many.

People with learning disabilities must be listened to and those who support us should feel confident to speak up when something doesn’t seem right. You know the people you support — you notice the changes, and that knowledge is vital.

Racheal did an amazing job today — and we hope the staff left feeling inspired that even small changes can make a big difference.

What a fantastic session on Friday! Despite the rainy weather outside, the energy inside Greenbank Sports Academy was absolutely brilliant!

Everyone turned up in great spirits, ready to play, support each other, and have fun. It was wonderful to see a mix of new faces and old friends, all getting involved and showing amazing teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the session.

Players swapped in and out of goal, switched teams at half-time, and kept the atmosphere full of encouragement, laughter, and enthusiasm.

No worries — just pure fun!

We’re so proud of everyone who took part and can’t wait for the next Friday!

Our radio team has been working hard behind the scenes to bring you another brilliant show! This week, Kevin will be interviewing Linda and Jacqui talking about the amazing work of the Congenital Heart Network.

Everyone has been practising their interviews and learning some new (and tricky!) words – but that’s all part of the fun! Tony supported Lewis to start typing up his script foe his show.

Things don’t always go exactly to plan, but our team always finds a way to keep going.  We’re proud to keep showing the world that people with a learning disability are just the same as everyone else — with our own voices, talents, and lots of passion for what we do!

Together, we keep promoting Mencap Liverpool & Sefton, celebrating inclusion, and having fun along the way!

On Friday, our Outreach Champions met at The Croissant 🥐 — a big thank you to Sue and the team for welcoming us!

We’ve got lots of exciting projects ahead as we continue working on our strategic goal which is “We want to find out what people think about Mencap and what they need or want — and use that to decide what Mencap should do for its members.”

We’ve already held our first focus group with members, and the feedback was inspiring - people want:
Variety, consistency and access to fun!
Learning new skills and meaningful activities matter
A strong desire for friendship, connection and inclusion

Using this feedback we’ve designed a questionnaire to help us hear from even more people – that we need to get signed off.  As well as our strategic object we are also working on a presentation for our AGM to reflect what our members want to say.

It’s a lot of hard work – but our team is full of passion and drive!

Wonderful to see Paul and Matthew volunteeering with In Another Place - it is brilliant that our members are a part of lots of other organisations - this means that peoples circles of support are richer and people have more friendships and connections. Too often people with learning disabilities are not afforded the same opportunities as people without learning disabilities and making connections and maintaining friendships is often a huge barrier for people with learning disabilities. Working with inclusive organisations like In Another Place is so important. GREAT WORK PAUL AND MATTY ###
