🤩 We’re proud to celebrate the completion of the first Media Module last Wednesday 🎬 at as part of the “Yes! We See You” Phase 2 project.

Our members, alongside students, have been taking part in a specially designed university experience made up of three mini modules. The first of these focused on Media Production 🎥 delivered by Chaddy and Daniel.

Throughout the module, participants gained hands-on experience in camera work, explored professional studio environments including the green room🎬, and planned and set up their own interviews. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they developed new technical and communication skills.

The programme concluded with a graduation-style celebration, where members proudly received their certificates a real highlight for everyone involved. 🎓

We’re excited to continue this journey and look forward to the upcoming modules.

A sincere thank you to , Janette Porter, Janine Melvin and the Diversity and Inclusion team for creating and supporting this valuable opportunity. Partnerships like this make a meaningful difference.

On Monday, Rachel, Kyle and Adam delivered Learning Disability Awareness Training to 4th Year student doctors at the University of Liverpool.

We are proud to deliver the session alongside Dr Fiona Greeley from the University of Liverpool and Learning Disability Healthcare Coordinators Vivien Mansfield and Hilary Harper from Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Our members have been delivering this training for over 13 years.

Our members talk to students about:

- Communication differences and what to look out for
-  The serious health inequalities people with a learning disability face e.g. that women with a learning disability die on average 26 years younger than women without a learning disability
- The importance of Annual Health Checks — missing them increases the risk of death by 1.5 times
- The importance of reasonable adjustments in healthcare settings

Students have the opportunity to ask questions, build rapport and see the person beyond the label. Because we are the same as everyone else, we love travelling, we support football teams …some are better teams than others (!), we care about our families and we have the same hopes and dreams as everyone else.. We just might need a bit more time. A bit more patience and for professionals to really listen and include us.

Thank you to the university of liverpool for involving people with learning disaiblities for all these years and to the Leraning Disability Team at Mersey Care who support and promote people with learning disabilities.

Together, we are helping to reduce health inequalities and raise awareness of learning disabilities and challenging the inequalities we face.

Our Outreach Champions have signed a letter to send to each of our local MPs calling for changes to the benefits system that are stopping people with a learning disability from delivering essential training.

Many of our members are trained Experts with Lived Experience delivering the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on learning disability and autism. This training is now required nationally for health and social care staff — and hearing directly from people with lived experience is what makes it powerful, real and impactful.

But right now, benefits rules mean he process can be stressful and worrying, and for some people it creates a barrier to taking part at all.

One part of government says lived experience must be at the heart of training. Another part makes it difficult for people to be paid fairly for their work.

People with a learning disability should be able to use our voices, be valued as professionals and not have barriers created that make it difficult for us to be involved.

We will l keep you updated!

On Tuesday our new member Ella had a taster session working in our Coffee Shop… and she absolutely SMASHED IT!

From the moment she started, Ella got stuck in and gave it her all.

Amy said: "Ella did a brilliant job. She picked up the till really quickly, was really friendly with customers, took out orders and cleared tables down — she really got involved. It was a fantastic first shift!"

We are so proud of you, Ella!

What a fantastic Members Session at the Cottage today! 🎉
We held a drop in voting day where our members cast their votes to choose who they would like to represent them as the new MMV (Mencap Members’ Voice) member. It was wonderful to see everyone getting involved, having their say, and making their voices heard. 💙
We also had double the celebrations! 🥞🎊
To mark Pancake Day and Chinese New Year, we enjoyed some delicious pancakes 🥞 and tasty hot Chinese snacks 🥡 (they went down a treat😋)!
Alongside the celebrations, members got creative with arts and crafts 🎨and even had a go at some Chinese writing ✍️. It was great to see so much enthusiasm, creativity and community spirit all in one afternoon.
Thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a special session! ✨

And just like that, it’s Thursday Club again!

At Mencap Liverpool and Sefton, we aim to support both the physical and mental wellbeing of our members. Each week at Thursday Club, we offer activities that people can enjoy and take part in together.

This week we were joined by Debbie, who led a beautiful sound bath session. Our members really enjoyed the experience, which used sound healing techniques to help people feel calmer, happier, and more relaxed.

Sound healing isn’t new. For centuries, people across many cultures have used sound to ease pain, calm the mind, and support overall wellbeing. During the session, Debbie used a mixture of drums, chimes, singing bowls and gentle chanting. Members simply listened and allowed the tones and vibrations to wash over them — it was a lovely, peaceful experience. Thank you, Debbie.

Alongside the sound bath, there was plenty happening across the evening. Some members enjoyed a game of pool in the Games Room, others took part in mindful colouring, and there was a lively game of boccia too.

None of this would be possible without our amazing and dedicated volunteers. In the middle of all the activities, they make time to chat with everyone, offer a listening ear, organise the teas and coffees for everyone, and at the end of the evening leave everything looking as though we were never there. Our volunteers are truly magic, and we can’t thank you enough.

We can’t wait for next week!

We are very sad to share that our wonderful member Carole Williams passed away last week.

Carole had been a member of Thursday Club since 1974 – an incredible 52 years. She was a much-loved part of our Mencap Liverpool and Sefton family, and she will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.

Our thoughts and love are with Carole’s fiancé, Kenneth, and with her family and friends at this very sad time.

As we’ve been looking through photos of Carole, one thing stands out in every single one – she is almost always with Kenneth. They were a devoted couple who clearly loved each other very much.

In 2020, when Carole turned 70, she became our very own Captain Tom, walking around her garden every day to raise money for Mencap Liverpool and Sefton, always thinking of others.

During Covid, despite the challenges (and plenty of giggles!) of learning how to use Zoom, those online meetings opened up precious ways for Carole and Kenneth to see each other in those early months.

Carole especially loved it when Boo’s Zoo visited – she was happiest holding the animals and enjoying every moment. But most often, you’d find Carole and Kenneth sitting together in the comfy armchairs at Thursday Club, holding hands, chatting, and enjoying a cup of tea.

Goodbye, Carole. You will be so missed, and you will always be part of our Thursday Club family.

Yesterday, Amber, Kevin and Tony — presenters on our Reach Out radio show — went along to the LCR 106.7fm Volunteers Evening alongside presenters from across the station.

The evening was all about meeting fellow volunteers, sharing ideas to raise the profile of the station, grow our listeners and explore ways to raise funds to keep community radio thriving

Amber shared some brilliant ideas and a working group is now being set up to develop these ideas further — with Amber, Tony and Kevin getting involved

You can show your support right now by tuning in to listen to our show Mencap Liverpool and Sefton “Reach Out”

Our member Rachael along with our Outreach Manager Jo recently and visited A 2 B at Aigburth Academy to meet the newly formed Monday Group — a group of adults with additional needs who meet weekly to decide what they’d like to do together.

The group is full of excitement, keen to go on trips, have fun, and welcome new people to make friends. Rachael said:

“I’d really like to get involved. It was interesting and I’m up for going on the trips as I love going to places and travelling.”

A big thank you to John, Jackie and Helena for making us feel so welcome! See you all again soon.
