This week, our members took part in the second session of our cookery course with Kirkdale Community Shop, focusing on healthy breakfasts and making better choices
The session began in the Community Shop with Emily, Community Wellbeing Practitioner, where our members were set a challenge – explore the shop and find the healthiest breakfast options. Working in pairs, everyone got involved comparing products and reading food labels to make informed choices.
Jess and Laura found similar breakfast items and compared their nutritional values – and some of the results were really surprising! It sparked great conversations and showed just how important it is to look beyond the front of the packet.
Back in the café, Chef Angie talked through everyone’s findings before setting us another eye-opening task…!
We were asked to pour a bowl of cereal based on our usual portion size. When these were weighed, it showed that many of us were eating up to three times the recommended amount 😲 Definitely something that gave us all food for thought!
Angie then demonstrated a range of healthier breakfast options that are not only simple to make, but keep you fuller for longer. From quick omelettes and scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast to yoghurt, fruit and a sprinkle of granola as a sprinkle on top instead of a full bowl of granola – Angie showed us how small, realistic swaps can make a big difference.
What makes this project so important is the power of partnership - Working alongside a mainstream organisation like Kirkdale Community Shop creates real opportunities for our members to build confidence, learn practical life skills and be part of the community.
This is what true inclusivity looks like – learning together, sharing experiences and breaking down barriers.
A huge thank you to Emily, Angie and the team in the shop for all your help and for welcoming us so warmly. We’re already looking forward to seeing the healthy breakfasts our members create before next week!
