🌟 Finalist – Maghull Civic Awards 2025 | Wellbeing Category 🌟

So proud of Joanne, one of our directors at Select Training . To be recognised for wellbeing at a civic level is something we’ll hold close for a very long time. It reminds us that small actions, delivered with heart, can truly change lives.

Joanne started Select Training CIC because she saw how many young people were suffering with their mental health, and when a child struggles, the whole family feels it. She wanted to give families the tools to support each other, to train Mental Health First Aiders in every corner of our community so no one would feel alone.

Over the last three years, we’ve watched parents grow in confidence, young people find the words to express how they feel, and families walk away just a little bit lighter and that, to us, is the true award.

Whatever happens on awards night — the impact is already happening. And that’s what keeps us going.

Ant and Dec have signed up to Race for a Reason! 😉

Kinda... if you squint, maybe! Friends Joanne and Sophie Kerr are convinced that being part of the challenge it's their big break as the next Ant and Dec, although loved ones are saying they’re giving more Jedward energy than Saturday Night Takeaway! No offence, boys!

Joanne admits their “skills” may add to the comedy value,

“We recently came last in a pub quiz, and that was after using Google Maps just to find the pub! Navigation and problem-solving are a work in progress, but I’ve already rebranded ‘last place’ as ‘reverse first’, so technically, we’ll be winners!

Joanne Wormald, proud mum of two boys, and the Founder and Director of Select Training CIC, is passionate about prevention, connection, and making sure no one faces their darkest moments alone. Rather than simply urging people to “reach out if you’re struggling.”, through Select Training, Joanne believes we must train people to “reach in”.

“Meeting Allison and Alfie was deeply moving. They took unimaginable pain and turned it into a lifeline for families bereaved by su***de. This challenge will push us physically, mentally and emotionally, and that’s the point. This cause matters too much to stay comfortable.

“I usually spend my weekends stood on the sidelines cheering my boys on, not doing the physical graft myself! This is our chance to show young people that their grief is seen, understood and never ignored. We’re proud to join the other teams encouraging people to reach in, not wait for someone to reach out.”

Sophie Kerr Managing Director Little Foxes, shares why taking part means so much to her,

“I’m proud to support Alfie’s Squad, because at Little Foxes Nursery we’re more than a childcare setting, we’re a community for families, helping with every part of life, including the hard bits. Children deserve safe, caring environments where their emotional wellbeing matters as much as their learning and fun. Families need trusted support networks when life feels tough.

“Alongside Alfie's Squad, I hope this challenge helps to build a future where no family facing loss feels along, and every child can grow, thrive and find joy.”

You can support Joanne and Sophie through their fundraising page, and keep an eye out for their Ant and Dec audition clips throughout the challenge!

Another brilliant day of collaboration in action

Huge thanks to the L30 Community Centre for hosting and filling today’s training with local families, to Local Solutions for funding the programme, and to Freedom to Flourish for stepping in and making it truly accessible.

You know when you’ve got a great idea, but miss a potential challenge? That was me! After the first session of our Mini Medics Mental Health training for families with children aged 7+, it quickly became clear that some families couldn’t attend because they didn’t have childcare for younger siblings.

That’s when true collaboration shone through 💡

My amazing friend Clare Marsh, founder of Freedom to Flourish (and a finalist in the upcoming MIB Awards 👏), stepped in without hesitation. While I delivered training to parents and older children, Clare created a beautiful emotional wellbeing session for the younger ones — ensuring no family was left behind.

💚 This is what community-led, family-first mental health training looks like.
💚 Real needs, local solutions, and partnerships that make it work.
