Ever wondered what a knee effusion (swelling) looks like?

A knee effusion is the excess accumulation of synovial fluid within or around the knee joint, often caused by injury (ligament/meniscus tears), arthritis, or infection.

This patient in question had suffered for an extended period of time and was impeding rehabilitation.

Result was nearly instant regaining of full range of movement and considerably more comfortable.

LACTATE: PRODUCTION AND MAX OXIDATION 📊

What are we looking at?

The chart compares lactate production (red line) with maximum aerobic lactate oxidation (blue line) across increasing speeds/paces. Both are measured in mmol/min.

🔴 Red line = how much lactate your muscles produce.
🔵 Blue line = how much lactate your body can clear (oxidise) using aerobic metabolism.

Your actual lactate concentration during exercise depends on the balance between these two….

LACTATE ACCUMULATION AND RECOVERY



What is this and what does it mean ❓

We’ve all heard of the ‘burn’ and ‘lactate build up’.

The metabolic profiling from INSCYD allows us to establish EXACTLY how long it takes for our bodies to clear the lactate buildup in our system following intense efforts.

This is important for a number of reasons.

It demonstrates to the athlete VISUALLY that the regular cookie cutter templates that have been passed on through generations of trainers aren’t always the best fit.

Different body compositions can have a huge effect on the accumulation of lactate in our energy systems and can produce a range of different results.

Using the INSCYD profiling system we can measure EXACTLY how much lactate you accumulate AND how long it takes to clear from your system. From there you can work out how long your rest periods should be and what pace/power you should be training at to ensure proper recovery.

We can also PREDICT the increases or decreases in energy systems by hypothetically increasing or decreasing certain elements of your metabolic profile.

One of the first metrics given to us by INSCYD metabolic profile, is the metabolic demand and VO2 max.

This allows us to identify at what point in intensity the demand for oxygen exceeds what can be provided by the aerobic system.

The darker blue line showing demand, the lighter blue line showing what can be provided.

The shaded area shows how much energy is starting to be provided by glycolytic power to help meet the demands of the workout intensity.

Next we will show the lactate accumulation and clearance graph to show EXACTLY how@ling it takes you to recover.
