A beautifully dissected heart,after removal from the donor's cadaver! Here, we see the heart without its surrounding sac, the pericardium. This double-walled sac encases the heart, which serves to protect and anchor it inside the chest. Between the out layer, parietal pericardium, and the inner layer, serous pericardium, runs pericardial fluid, which lubricates the heart during contractions and the movements of lungs and diaphragm.

As we can tell by the small size of the heart, this individual was quite likely to be young.
