Retreat Myths… Stables Wellbeing Style
People arrive at Stables with all sorts of ideas about what a retreat might be like.
That everyone will be super bendy. That the food will be green juice and air.
That everyone else already knows each other.
After six years of hosting retreats here in the foothills of Bannau Brycheiniog, I can tell you… most of those assumptions don’t hold up.
Here are a few myths we hear again and again — and what actually happens at Stables:
Myth: Everyone else will know exactly what they’re doing.
Reality: Most people are quietly figuring it out on day one.
There’s always that moment where everyone looks around to see where shoes get left… and then relaxes.
Myth: You have to be “good” at yoga or Pilates
Reality: Being good or bad isn’t a thing here.
Plenty of guests arrive having never done a class before. Someone always whispers, “Is this right?”
Myth: Everyone already knows each other.
Reality: Most people come alone.
The first dinner is gentle and polite. By the third, there are inside jokes and shared stories.
Myth: Retreats are only for the deeply spiritual.
Reality: Many people come because they’re tired and need space.
Quiet mornings, long walks, fewer notifications — that’s the real magic.
Myth: You have to join every activity.
Reality: Our retreats are spacious by design.
Someone always skips sunrise yoga. Someone always finds a cosy corner to nap.
Myth: It will feel awkward coming alone.
Reality: Some of the best conversations start that way.
“Where have you travelled from?” works every time.
Myth: The schedule will be intense
Reality: We curate a balance of gentle activity and deep rest.
More tea. More naps. More slow dinners.
Myth: Everyone will be super fit.
Reality: Our groups are beautifully mixed.
Some come for yoga, some for hiking, some for the food, all excellent reasons.
Myth: You’ll be totally disconnected from the outside world.
Reality: Phones get used less, not banned.
You can still say goodnight to your loved ones.
Myth: Retreats are only for big life crises.
Reality: Most guests simply want a break.
Nothing dramatic, just time to breathe.
Myth: Everyone wakes up early.
Reality: Morning practice is optional.
Some greet the sunrise… others greet breakfast.
Myth: Retreats are silent all the time.
Reality: There are quiet moments, and plenty of laughter.
Myth: You’ll come back a completely different person.
Reality: Most people return home a little calmer, a little clearer, sleeping better, breathing slower.
And that’s usually exactly what they needed.
These are just a few things I’ve learned from watching people arrive with expectations… and leave with a completely different experience.
