All of us at Lord-Brown & Harty have been sickened by the actions of the two rogue companies in England who have been prosecuted for their frankly despicable actions and complete disregard for the care of those entrusted to them. We are glad that the these individuals have been jailed.
Both Chris and I have been calling for proper licensing and training for many years. Along with our colleagues at the National Association of Funeral Directors we have consistently pushed for its implementation at a government level. As members of the NAFD we are inspected and must adhere to their requirements at the highest level and we are grateful to them for this. But it needs to go much further. These horrific examples must now push our governments in England and Wales to join our Scottish colleagues with a far more robust system. Now is the time for us to show our commitment to the families who trust us to be beyond reproach.
Licensing must be mandatory. Funeral home inspection must be mandatory. Mortuary facility inspection must be mandatory. Staff training must be continuous.
Government efforts of late have been more to do with financial transparency than forcing funeral companies to have the correct facilities. The failed Competition and Marketing Authority requirements had no effect and we have always been far more transparent than they required.
Now is the time for change, now is the time to act on the wishes of those of us positively implementing essential requirements and making sure our facilities are of the highest quality.
We are so confident in the standard of our premises and facilities that we are more than happy for any inspection to take place. Be it from the families we look after to local and governmental inspectors.
We care about you and your loved ones. We implicitly understand the trust it takes to allow us to care for them. We will never abuse that trust.
We call on those in government at a local and UK level to inspect every funeral business, to implement stringent requirements, to close down those whose facilities are not acceptable.
The time is now.
