Felling this whopper Beech for Denbigh council this morning, tree was dying off with Meripilus giganteus, Meripilus is a polypore fungus in the family Meripilaceae. It causes a white rot in various types of broadleaved trees, particularly beech (Fagus), but also Abies, Picea, Pinus, Quercus and Ulmus species. This bracket fungus, commonly known as the giant polypore or black-staining polypore, is often found in large clumps at the base of trees, although fruiting bodies are sometimes found some distance away from the trunk, parasitizing the roots. M. giganteus has a circumboreal distribution in the northern Hemisphere, and is widely distributed in Europe. In the field, it is recognizable by the large, multi-capped fruiting body, as well as its pore surface that quickly darkens black when bruised or injured.

Veteranisation of a huge old oak tree this week, I’ve been working on this monster for last few years as it’s slowly declined in health, this year over 50% of the crown died off, the conscious decision was made by the owners and myself to remove all the dangerous brittle limbs and leave it as “pollarded” state, mimicking natural tears or branch failure, creating the perfect spaces for bats and birds, all natural habitat like holes or cavities where left and any limbs showing sign of life! By doing this it will hopefully stand for a long long time and become a great space for birds and bugs to live!
Owl boxes and bat boxes have been previously fitted but not been used, we will reinstalling them and hopefully see some use!

Not always cutting them down!

Veteran oak dismantle today, the tree has been causing subsidence issues to the house.
Tracks matts on the lawn and bought in the 26metre MEWP to assist the operation. Crown off in one day and ready to fell tomorrow 🤙💪
