There is so much more to grief than crying.

Grief is complex, changing and incredibly personal. There can be so much happening when we're grieving, a lot of which goes unseen.

If you need support, we're here 💜

Shiatsu – what is it anyway? Short answer, I have no idea.
Long answer, I can attempt….

I have been practicing Shiatsu for 20 years and teaching it for ten, and I still don’t have a definition for what I do! Which makes marketing really hard, and brings out my ‘Imposter Syndrome’ when anyone asks what is Shiatsu? And can I help them with this or that problem?

Yes, Shiatsu is rooted in Chinese Medicine and uses pressure points—it's massage-like, but not exactly massage. It originated in Japan but continues to evolve. Each school emphasises something different, and individual practitioners develop their own style. Some follow Traditional Chinese Medicine deeply, others lean into Zen simplicity, physiotherapy-like techniques, or energy work, others describe it as acupuncture without needles. Honestly, I read the Shiatsu Society magazine and most of it goes over my head.

So, for me the question is, what do I offer under the broad umbrella term ‘Shiatsu’? This is something that is still emerging. I found some clues while training to be a person-centred counsellor, there are some overlaps in my approach.

Primarily my intention is to provide a space. A space for the person in front of me to be. To Just Be. As they are, who they are, in this moment. Acknowledged and accepted.

What is called for in the touch is different for each person in each moment. I follow the body, I have no plan, no agenda, no expert knowledge. Today this person can be held, today witnessed. Today this person needs stillness, calm, quiet, deep rest. Today this arm wants stretching, opening, this hip joint enjoys dynamic movement, while this back likes to be gently rocked. These feet want grounding while these hands want waking up.

So when someone asks, can you help me? I can only shrug, I don’t know. The same is true in my counselling work, I really don’t know. I might not be the right fit for you. I have no clue what I am doing – but I am very qualified and experienced in being clueless– so I am happy to explore the space with you.

I cannot promise results, but I can promise presence, attention, curiosity, humility. I am constantly moved and humbled by what occurs in this space.

Futon time! I've been working on a massage couch the last few years due to limited space in my old room, and a knee injury before that. It was wonderful to get the futon out again for shiatsu today, so grounding for practitioner and client and really allows for movement and stretches. There are pro's and con's to the massage table and the futon so if you have a preference just let me know!

Finding a sunny spot.
I would love to say I started the day with an hour of yoga, followed by a meditation then a green smoothie before calmly waking up the kids in my minimalist home and joyfully walking them to school being fully attentive and present to their needs.

Instead I slept badly, woke up with stressful dreams, drank two cups of caffinated tea while tripping over clutter and snapping at the kids, and could feel my nervous system in stress mode before I had even started the day. So when I arrived at work and saw this sunny spot I just lay down in it. Ten minutes of blissful sunshine on my skin. .. while my mind wandered "have I got time for this... shhhhh.... I should set an alarm.... shhhhh..... maybe I can write an Instagram post about not doing yoga.... shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh". Now I am drinking my 3rd tea sitting on the floor writing this. Self care doesn't have to be spa breaks and smoothies. It can be 10 minutes enjoying a sunny spot, whether it is actual sunshine or just noticing you have 5 minutes to yourself.

This week I have been playing with different room layouts. I have also installed secondary glazing as that beautiful 2.5 meter meter can get a bit chilly, and it is also helping to reduce the traffic noise from the road outside. Insulated windows combined with moving the chairs to the corner made for a calm and cosy evening of counselling sessions. Sadly, in the move I accidentally snapped off the biggest leaf from my monstera plant... it looks like a bit of the node broke off so hoping I can propagate... any plant experts out there?
