Shiatsu – what is it anyway? Short answer, I have no idea.
Long answer, I can attempt….
I have been practicing Shiatsu for 20 years and teaching it for ten, and I still don’t have a definition for what I do! Which makes marketing really hard, and brings out my ‘Imposter Syndrome’ when anyone asks what is Shiatsu? And can I help them with this or that problem?
Yes, Shiatsu is rooted in Chinese Medicine and uses pressure points—it's massage-like, but not exactly massage. It originated in Japan but continues to evolve. Each school emphasises something different, and individual practitioners develop their own style. Some follow Traditional Chinese Medicine deeply, others lean into Zen simplicity, physiotherapy-like techniques, or energy work, others describe it as acupuncture without needles. Honestly, I read the Shiatsu Society magazine and most of it goes over my head.
So, for me the question is, what do I offer under the broad umbrella term ‘Shiatsu’? This is something that is still emerging. I found some clues while training to be a person-centred counsellor, there are some overlaps in my approach.
Primarily my intention is to provide a space. A space for the person in front of me to be. To Just Be. As they are, who they are, in this moment. Acknowledged and accepted.
What is called for in the touch is different for each person in each moment. I follow the body, I have no plan, no agenda, no expert knowledge. Today this person can be held, today witnessed. Today this person needs stillness, calm, quiet, deep rest. Today this arm wants stretching, opening, this hip joint enjoys dynamic movement, while this back likes to be gently rocked. These feet want grounding while these hands want waking up.
So when someone asks, can you help me? I can only shrug, I don’t know. The same is true in my counselling work, I really don’t know. I might not be the right fit for you. I have no clue what I am doing – but I am very qualified and experienced in being clueless– so I am happy to explore the space with you.
I cannot promise results, but I can promise presence, attention, curiosity, humility. I am constantly moved and humbled by what occurs in this space.
