❌ MYTH: Stretching alone prevents injuries

✅ FACT: Strength, load management, proprioception, neuromuscular control, and recovery matter too!

Yes… I’m a physio 😄 and yes, we do have a reputation for prescribing plenty of stretching.

I also spent a fair bit of time in professional rugby — and rugby players aren’t exactly known for being super flexible 😅, yet many are incredibly robust and durable.

🧐 Flexibility can matter, and in some cases it’s part of the issue — but it’s rarely the whole answer.

Good rehab will also include strength, smart loading, proprioception, and neuromuscular control — not just chasing more range.

Train smart — not just flexible 💪

🚨 🔔

🦵 Single-leg strength = game changer

Whether you’re a runner, footballer, or gym-goer — most sports happen one leg at a time.
If rehab never progressed past two feet on the ground, you probably weren’t finished yet.

1️⃣ Relative strength (most important)
For elite field & court athletes:
👉 Single-leg press = 1.8–2.5 × bodyweight per leg
• Minimum acceptable (elite): ~1.8× BW
• Very strong / robust: 2.2–2.5× BW
• Power athletes often exceed this

📌 Example:
80 kg athlete → ideal single-leg press 145–200 kg per leg

2️⃣ Side-to-side asymmetry
Often matters more than absolute load.
• < 10% difference → acceptable
• < 5% difference → ideal / elite standard
• > 10–15% → 🚩 red flag (especially post-injury)
This is non-negotiable for return-to-sport decisions.

3️⃣ Post-injury targets (ACL, knee, hip)
Elite RTS criteria:
• ≥ 90–95% limb symmetry index (LSI)
• Ideally reaching ≥ 2× BW on the involved side
• Strength must be repeatable, not a one-off max

Two legs lifting together ≠ ready to play.
Single-leg capacity tells the real story.

Here are a few single leg exercise options you could use! If you’d like help with an appropriate plan which will be effective for you, don’t hesitate to ask 🙌🏼

🚀 What’s next?
We’re excited to be welcoming VALD Dynamo+, which will allow us to objectively identify strength deficits and side-to-side differences with precision.
The countdown is on.

Being “fit” in one way doesn’t automatically prepare you for the specific demands of your sport ⚠️

Training and rehab must reflect how the sport is actually played. This is important to consider in the rehabilitation process & for conditioning to improve at your sport!

Different sports stress the body in very different ways:

👉Football / Rugby/ Netball / Padel: Sprinting, stopping, accelerating, changing direction, contact, fatigue, however, the demands of each sport are still unique

👉Running: Repetitive loading, pacing, tendon tolerance, impact control

👉Gym-based fitness: Controlled movement, predictable loads

Each creates specific strength, speed, and tissue demands.

Steady running improves cardiovascular fitness, but it doesn’t:

🔺Prepare muscles for high-speed sprinting
🔺Train the body to decelerate safely
🔺Build tolerance to contact or sudden load
🔺Replicate fatigue under game-like conditions

This is why athletes often feel “fit” but still break down 😧

Rehab shouldn’t stop when pain settles.
It should progress toward:

✔️Game speed
✔️Game fatigue
✔️Game confidence

If rehab doesn’t reflect the sport, the body isn’t fully prepared to return ⚠️ ❗️

Knee pain doesn’t always mean you need rest ⁉️
Often, it means you need the right exercises — and sometimes the right hands-on treatment too.

If your knees hurt when:
• Going up or down stairs
• Squatting or lunging
• Sitting for long periods
• Running or playing sport

👉 These basic rehab exercises plus joint mobilisation/manual therapy can help improve mobility, strength, and reduce pain 👇

🔹 Joint mobilisations (manual therapy) can help by:
• Improving knee and surrounding joint movement
• Reducing stiffness and pain
• Allowing exercises to feel smoother and more comfortable
• Helping you load the knee more effectively during rehab

Rehab exercise examples:
Spanish squats with resistance band to mobilise the knee – 3 x 5–8 reps
Terminal knee extension with resistance band – 3–4 x 10–12 reps
Single leg resistance band press – 3–4 x 10–12 reps
Resisted hip adduction with resistance band – 3 x 10–12 reps
Glute clam with resistance band – 3 x 10–12
Single leg hamstring bridge – 3 x 6–8 reps
Single leg balance figure of 8 – 3 x 5–8 each way

Includes instructions, photos, and videos for guidance ✍️ 📸 🎥
Get back to the activities you love, pain-free. 🏃‍♀️💪

⚠️ Just an example—showing how we might help. Manual therapy and exercise selection should always be tailored to you by a qualified professional.

Back at work, back training, back in the garden — and feeling it? 😨

After Christmas, routines change quickly — returning to work, restarting exercise, getting back into sport, and spending more time in the garden as the days change. At the same time, colder or unpredictable weather can leave muscles and joints feeling stiffer than usual.
All of this can put extra load on your body, especially if activity levels increase too fast.

📣 A few simple tips to stay injury-free:✔ Ease back into work and training gradually✔ Warm up properly — your body may need longer in cooler weather✔ Break up gardening and DIY into shorter sessions✔ Don’t ignore aches that linger or worsen

⚠️ Sudden spikes in activity are one of the most common causes of muscle and joint injuries this time of year. Listening to your body early can help prevent small issues becoming bigger problems.

If something doesn’t feel right, getting it checked early can make all the difference‼️
